Flydubai suspends Israel flights as hijacking probe widens
Flydubai has halted all Dubai–Tel Aviv service after a co-pilot allegedly tried to crash a Tel Aviv-bound flight. The UAE has called the incident a "dangerous terrorist act" and praised the wounded captain as a "true hero." Israeli investigators are expected to join the UAE questioning. Netanyahu says the probe is examining who sent the attacker, warns of a "very heavy price," and says passengers prevented a "9/11-type disaster." Jewish communities worldwide are reported to be under heightened threat.
What it means for advisors: Hundreds of Israelis are stranded in the UAE. Israel is arranging rescue flights and extra security on Israeli and foreign carriers. Clients heading to or from Israel after Simchat Torah, or connecting through Dubai, should expect cancellations, rebooking onto carriers such as Arkia or El Al, and tighter airport screening.
A reported WSJ account says Oman had banned the co-pilot from flying before flydubai hired him. If it holds, it could add pressure on Gulf carriers' vetting and may prolong the suspension. No restart date has been given.
- Check every itinerary routed through Dubai or on flydubai metal to Israel.
- Build in rebooking time and confirm alternate carriers' availability.
- Brief clients on situational awareness and expect longer airport security procedures.
