Brilliant Lady drops Cabo for Ensenada as Rachel swells keep the port closed
Virgin Voyages replaced Cabo San Lucas with Ensenada on Brilliant Lady's Oct. 3 sailing. Swells from Hurricane Rachel have kept Cabo closed since Sept. 30, with no reopening date. This is the second straight Brilliant Lady sailing hit by a hurricane, after Polo.
Some guests are calling the swap a "major downgrade." Cabo is a tender port, so it is exposed to swell, and early-October Mexican Riviera sailings may see further changes. Advisors with clients on those sailings should reach out before departure and set expectations on port substitutions. Check the National Hurricane Center outlook for current storm status. Its main page listed no active tropical cyclones when this edition was compiled.
Scarlet Lady breaks moorings in Rhodes after wind closes Mykonos
High winds closed Mykonos, so Virgin Voyages extended Scarlet Lady's stay in Rhodes and added Chania to the itinerary. The ship then broke free of its moorings in Rhodes and touched three small boats. No injuries were reported.
For advisors, the practical point is that wind-driven closures and substitutions are likely to continue on late-season Greek Isles sailings. Clients should expect port swaps and longer stays instead of the published port order. It is also worth knowing the details of the mooring incident before clients ask about it.
Holland America changes Zaandam's 35-day Hawaii and Tahiti voyage
The Oct. 15 Zaandam sailing from San Diego drops Tabuaeran (Fanning Island) and has revised port times because of reduced operating speed. This follows propulsion issues on the ship in June.
This is a long, high-value voyage departing in under two weeks. Advisors with clients booked on it should check for notifications from the line and be ready to discuss compensation or cancellation options. Further changes are possible, and El Niño concerns add risk to the schedule.
Royal Caribbean moves guests who paid for specific Ovation cabins to guarantee status
Guests who paid about $300 extra to choose exact staterooms on Ovation of the Seas are being reassigned to guarantee (GTY) status because of occupancy corrections. Compensation has been inconsistent. This is the second sailing affected, which suggests a pattern.
Advisors who sold cabin-select fares on Ovation should audit those reservations now. Set client expectations, then push for an upgrade or onboard credit, and check whether the fee paid is being addressed.
Carnival orders full muster drills on six sailings, Oct. 8-12
Carnival will hold in-person safety drills on Spirit, Luminosa, Legend, Radiance, Firenze and Miracle. The drills delay departures and pause food and beverage service. The requirement is routine, twice-yearly compliance, so the impact is modest.
Tell clients on these sailings to arrive on time and expect a longer embarkation.
Hero of the Seas gets a SpongeBob musical; Port Canaveral adds two mega-ships in 2027
Royal Caribbean will stage The SpongeBob Musical on Hero of the Seas, the first SpongeBob production at sea. The ship is the fourth Icon-class vessel and arrives at PortMiami in August 2027. The show gives advisors a family and multigenerational selling point as Hero's launch season builds.
Port Canaveral will add Carnival Festivale in May 2027, the fourth Excel-class ship, and MSC World Atlantic in November 2027. MSC World Atlantic has just floated out. The port expects 23 homeported ships and 10.9M passenger movements in 2027. Inaugural seasons are open to sell now.
Carnival and Holland America open 2028 deployments
Carnival opened 2028-29 West Coast sales on Oct. 1. Carnival Adventure makes its first Alaska season, repositioned from Australia. Legend sails Alaska and Baja from San Francisco. Spirit has a 16-night Panama Canal Journeys voyage, followed by Alaska and Hawaii. Early booking windows give advisors a chance to lock in group blocks and early-booking pricing.
Holland America has 27 sailings on sale for Canada/New England from May to October 2028. The line says no other line will call at Montréal more often in 2028. The season is the regional debut of Zuiderdam after its $500M Evolution refit, which suits premium and older-skewing clients.
Princess launches a ChatGPT app for searching sailings and pricing
Princess says it is the first cruise line with a native ChatGPT app, covering more than 330 destinations. Consumers may increasingly start research in AI tools, which affects lead flow to advisors. The case for advisors rests on adding value beyond what direct booking and AI search provide, such as handling disruptions like those above.
