Rhine at Kaub falls to -6 cm; Riviera reroutes and cancels
The Rhine gauge at Kaub has dropped to -6 cm, and Riviera's George Eliot and Geoffrey Chaucer cannot transit the Rhine Gorge. Both are running amended itineraries on the Sept. 30 sailings, after two earlier late-September departures were cancelled. The forecast shows only modest improvement, and more October departures are already affected.
The Gorge is a signature Rhine highlight, so amended routings change what clients actually experience, not just logistics. Advisors with Rhine or Main-Danube clients should check sailings across Riviera, Scenic, Emerald and Viking now, and confirm each line's compensation and rebooking policies before clients ask.
Clients are asking whether Europe river cruises are still worth booking
The Danube at Budapest hit 10 cm in July, beating the 2018 record, and Kaub has fallen below its 2018 low. Viking Ullur ran aground in July with 186 passengers evacuated. Clients holding nonrefundable deposits are asking questions, and a first-hand TravelPulse account shows how the disruption plays out onboard.
Advisors need clear talking points on risk, flexibility, travel insurance and each line's low-water policy, plus a case for shoulder-season or alternative-river bookings. Viking executive Leah Talactac has also discussed the line's growth amid low-water challenges. The source excerpt is thin, so confirm Viking's specific client-protection policies directly before relying on them.
American Ranger christened; three more ACL ships due in 2027
American Cruise Lines christened American Ranger on the Hudson. It is the line's third new ship of 2026 and the fourth Patriot Class vessel. American Mariner, American Navigator and the riverboat American Anthem arrive in 2027.
2026 Hudson cruises are virtually sold out, with the last departure on Oct. 25. The 2027 Hudson program will run round-trip from Albany with an NYC stop and a Statue of Liberty pass.
For advisors, this is a domestic option with no low-water exposure for clients unsettled by European disruption, and a prompt to plan 2027 inventory early.
Riviera Travel hires MICE sales lead as solo ship and Mekong launch near
Riviera Travel has named Donna Kurtz as MICE sales director for North America, a new charter, incentive and group sales role. She comes from Scenic and Emerald and has a $40M+ charter record. The hire points to a group and advisor push in the North American market.
It comes ahead of Riviera's first dedicated solo river ship and a Mekong expansion, both planned for 2027. Advisors with group and solo-traveller clients should watch for new inventory and group terms.
