Nepal's autumn season turns on landslides and an avalanche, while Ecuador and Peru carry their own warnings

Landslides have cut the Annapurna Circuit and Manang, and the Himlung base-camp avalanche has put an outfitter and the permit system under scrutiny. Ecuador's state of emergency and Peru's October 4 election add risk to two core South American itineraries. Intrepid's advisor-only family offer is the one commercial opening in the day's items.

Landslides close Annapurna Circuit and Manang at peak trekking season

Flooding and landslides have cut road and footpath access in Manang and on the Annapurna Circuit. The report counts 46 landslides on the Tatopani route, and an avalanche reportedly cut the Thorong La route. This is peak autumn season, so Nepal clients booked on small-group treks, including Intrepid, G Adventures and Wilderness Travel departures, need itineraries confirmed now.

The Manaslu Circuit is open and Jugal Himal is newly open, so both are possible reroutes. The FCDO also flags the 26 August Rasuwa flood and Middle East airspace disruption, with free visa extensions for travelers delayed by flights. Check insurance wording on both points before clients travel.

Himlung avalanche kills 16 staff and guides

The avalanche buried Himlung base camp under about 4m of snow. It killed 16 people, mostly kitchen staff and guides working for Himalayan Holidays Trek & Expeditions. Eleven people survived. Only one team with six foreign members is still permitted for Himlung.

Advisors selling Nepal expeditions should expect cancellations and closer scrutiny of operators. Clients are likely to ask about guide welfare and insurance. Ask suppliers how they handle both.

Ecuador and Peru: FCDO advice affects routing and insurance

Ecuador: A 60-day state of emergency began 15 September, and curfews apply in El Oro, Guayas, Los Ríos and Manabí. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Coast provinces and to areas within 20km of the Colombia border. That advice can invalidate travel insurance. Check supplier contingency plans for clients routing through Guayaquil, including Galápagos clients. Airside transit at Guayaquil is exempt.

Peru: The FCDO warns of crowds and occasional protests around the local elections on October 4 and the days after. Core Machu Picchu, Cusco and Tambopata itineraries are outside the restricted areas, which remain the VRAEM and the Loreto border strip. Warn clients who are in country.

Intrepid's advisor-only October family deal

Intrepid is offering an extra 20% off child pricing, sold only through travel advisors. It stacks on the 20% already built into Family trips. It applies to bookings made in October for departures from Jan 1 to Dec 17, 2027, on all Family trips except Malaysia. Intrepid highlights Costa Rica and Morocco itineraries.

The article's dates are inconsistent. It is dated October 2026 but refers to 'October 2027'. Confirm the booking window with Intrepid before quoting clients.

HX posts record Arctic suite demand and an AI whale-detection trial

HX Expeditions closed its Arctic season with its highest-ever suite bookings across 31 sailings. That points to strong premium demand and tighter 2027 suite availability. HX also ran a world-first AI whale-detection trial aboard MS Fram, and its citizen-science program logged 26,491 submissions. Both give advisors sustainability talking points for polar cruise sales. The report is partly a press release, so treat the claims accordingly.

Tambopata guests join wildlife research

Rainforest Expeditions lodges, including Tambopata Research Center and Refugio Amazonas, let guests take part in research. This suits families and eco-minded clients. The macaw clay lick is the headline activity. It is a differentiated add-on for Peru Amazon itineraries. The article also notes that drought and illegal mining threaten the area.
