US lifts Kenya to Level 3 and adds Ebola declaration for flights from Nov 3
The US raised its Kenya advisory to Level 3, 'reconsider travel', on Oct 19. From Nov 3, a new Ebola declaration will apply to US-bound travellers, covering anyone who has been in the DRC in the prior 21 days, with restrictions also touching Uganda and South Sudan.
For advisors selling East Africa to North American clients, the practical work is client messaging and contract review. An advisory does not automatically trigger refunds, so check each supplier's cancellation and change terms before clients ask. Routings that touch the DRC, Uganda or South Sudan need particular care ahead of Nov 3. Some clients may want to move to Southern Africa, which is worth offering as an option rather than pushing.
SUJÁN buys Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro; both close for redesign
Lower Zambezi's pioneer camps have changed hands. SUJÁN has bought Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro, and both are closing for redesign. Old Mondoro is due to reopen in May 2027. Chiawa will not reopen until June 2028, so it is out of inventory for the 2027 season and the start of 2028.
The Cumings family's partnership on Puku Ridge and Chichele Presidential ends before 2027. Advisors holding 2027 Lower Zambezi bookings should look for alternatives now and expect repricing when the camps return.
Kafue gains two new camps at opposite ends of the market
Anantara has opened its first African safari lodge on the Kafue River. It is a 13-key elevated tented camp with opening rates from about USD 6,289 per room per night, full board, for two. That is among the highest in the region. The brand's loyalty and distribution reach could widen demand for a park being restored by African Parks. Confirm commission terms before quoting.
At the other end, Classic Zambia Safaris has opened Lwenge River Camp. It has five rooms, runs May 1 to Dec 1, and shares an exclusive area with Musekese Camp. Access is via Lufupa airstrip. It suits clients who want a smaller, research-minded camp.
El Niño warning for Kruger and the north-east this summer
The South African Weather Service expects below-normal rainfall across the north-east from November to March. That raises the risk of fire and drought in Kruger. The WMO says this El Niño could reach unprecedented intensity.
For December to March clients, expect heat, thinner vegetation and game concentrated on water. Effects on the Zambezi basin and Victoria Falls water flow may follow later. Set expectations early on green-season conditions, fire and malaria factors, and avoid selling the season on lush-bush imagery.
Zanzibar: seats up about 33%, hotel rates down about 18%
Zanzibar seat capacity has risen about 33% over six months while online hotel rates are down about 18% year on year across all categories. ATTA and Data Appeal data show UAE capacity up 57%, Oman up 108%, and UK forward bookings up 51%.
That favours bundled safari-and-beach pricing and gives advisors room to negotiate on beach extensions. Quality is uneven, though: the Tourism Product Index is only 65, so vet properties rather than chase the lowest rate.
Tipping platform and women-only departures aimed at the trade
SafariTip, a QR-code digital tipping platform co-founded by Ker & Downey Africa's general manager, has launched. It allocates tips to individual staff wallets and works with limited connectivity. Advisors may need to update their client briefings on gratuities and cash.
Separately, The Eco-Travel Boutique has launched Safari Sisters: nine 2027 departures across six countries, for groups of 4–12 women. Dedicated agent rates and logins are offered, which makes it a commissionable option for solo and female travellers.
