Chains chase the booking: AI agents, conversions and card tie-ups reshape who owns the guest

Wyndham is feeding rates to AI agents, IHG says conversions now drive half of US openings, and Airbnb has moved into Amex Travel. Each shifts where bookings originate, with consequences for advisor commission and rate parity.

Wyndham pitches AI agents as a new kind of guest

On its Q3 call, CEO Geoff Ballotti said Wyndham pushes availability and rates through its central reservation system directly to AI agents, including Meta Muse and OpenAI, to win direct bookings. Wyndham treats the agents as a new 'guest' type.

For advisors, the commercial question is whether agent-originated bookings are treated like direct bookings, and what that means for rate parity and commission. The source doesn't say. Ask your Wyndham contacts before agent-sourced inventory becomes a meaningful channel.

IHG says conversions are now about half of US openings

IHG's Q3 update says conversions make up about half of US openings and 60% of signings, mostly from rival brands. Consensus room growth is now 4.8%.

Expect more competitor-branded hotels to flip to Holiday Inn, Garner, Avid, Crowne Plaza, Vignette and similar brands. For advisors, a client's familiar hotel may change flag, with different loyalty eligibility and commission-program participation. Check status on existing bookings and preferred properties.

Airbnb enters Amex Travel; Platinum credit extends to Luxe

Amex Travel now sells more than one million Airbnb listings, with up to 5X points on prepaid stays. The Platinum $600 lodging credit can go toward Airbnb Luxe stays of two nights or more, and a new $250 Experiences credit comes with them.

This pulls high-end clients toward a channel that competes with advisor-sold hotels and villas. Advisors working with Platinum holders should be ready to show what a managed booking adds over a self-serve one.

Points sales: Hyatt 20% off, IHG benchmark, ALL Accor double points

Hyatt is selling points at 20% off through Dec 21, with the purchase cap doubled to 110,000. That works out to roughly 2.08 cents per point, below Hyatt's usual 30% or 40%-bonus sales, so it suits mainly high-priced award stays.

IHG's 100% bonus sale, which came with a 3,500-point extra gift, has ended. It priced points at about 0.48 cents each, a benchmark for the Black Friday offers likely to follow.

ALL Accor offers double points on stays of two or more nights in North and Central America and the Caribbean through Dec 31, up to five times. It covers Fairmont, SLS, Faena, 21c and Banyan Tree, a ready incentive for holiday Fairmont and Mayakoba bookings.

The audience is narrow, but it signals IHG's push for Chinese high-value travelers. Advisors with China outbound clients should know it exists.

UAE hotels lean on short-haul demand after the Iran war

UAE hotels are leaning on short-haul markets as long-haul demand stays weak following the Iran war. IHCL says higher jet fuel and airfares make Americas and Australia demand 'wishful thinking' for now.

Cheaper Dubai rooms are the opening. Advisors may find softer rates and better value for US clients willing to travel, though the region's recovery is uneven.
