United makes 2027 Premier status spend-only and harder to reach
Starting with 2027 qualification, United's Premier tiers are earned on spend alone, with a four-flight minimum, and the flight-count route to status is gone. Reported requirement increases run from 14% to as high as 45.5%, with 1K moving to 32,000 PQP. Coverage also points to weaker benefits, including the PlusPoints upgrade chart being eliminated, and a head start that requires a United card.
For corporate clients who fly many cheap segments, the change hurts most: they will need more spend to hold the same tier and will have worse upgrade odds once they get there. Advisors should reset expectations now, check which clients sit near a threshold, and weigh consolidating spend on United against alternatives.
- Spend-only qualification, minimum four flights
- 1K requirement rises to 32,000 PQP
- PlusPoints chart eliminated; card needed for head start
Lufthansa expected to take 44.9% of TAP, beating Air France-KLM
Lufthansa Group is expected to win a 44.9% stake in TAP Air Portugal over Air France-KLM, with an official announcement expected October 14 and regulatory approval still pending. TAP is in Star Alliance but outside the Lufthansa transatlantic joint venture, and it currently undercuts on price.
If TAP joined the JV with antitrust immunity, fares and schedules to Portugal and on to Brazil and South America would be coordinated. That would likely lift corporate fares and could change negotiated contracts. Advisors with Lisbon or South America volume should review current TAP deals and expect rate pressure once approvals clear.
Delta pushes back Riyadh launch; Israel enforces crew-nationality rules
Delta has postponed its Atlanta–Riyadh launch, originally due October 23, to March 2027 after airport strikes. Riyadh's airport is closed through at least October 17 and several carriers are suspending service. Advisors with clients on the route need to rebook, reroute or refund, and should revisit duty-of-care and Saudi risk guidance.
Separately, Israel is enforcing rules after the flydubai attack that bar crew holding citizenship, including dual citizenship, from countries without Israeli relations. An Ethiopian cargo flight has already returned over an Indonesian pilot, and flydubai pilots have been detained. Expect last-minute crew-related cancellations or diversions on Tel Aviv services, and build buffers into itineraries.
Marriott shows Bonvoy elites their upgrade queue and expands lounges in Asia
Marriott is testing an airline-style upgrade list that lets Gold-and-above members see their position and estimated upgrades before arrival. It is due at more than 250 US and Canada hotels by November. Nightly Upgrade Awards still take priority, so visibility will not guarantee a better room. Advisors can use it to set realistic expectations for elite clients.
Marriott is also piloting a rebranded Bonvoy Lounge with upgraded food and staffing, covering about 100 Asia-Pacific hotels from February 2027 and 220 in Greater China in Q1 2027. Details are thin, but it is worth noting when recommending Marriott properties for Asia trips.
Expedia faces antitrust suit over hotel rate inflation
Andrews v. Expedia Group, filed October 2 in Seattle, alleges price-fixing across channels that inflated US hotel rates by up to 30% since 2022. The claims are contested and unproven, but the case could affect OTA rate parity and supplier relationships, and change how advisors position direct and agency rates against online channels. Watch for early rulings and any hotel-side reaction.
Southwest plans premium lounges; American cancels error-fare awards late
Southwest plans a 33,000-square-foot BWI lounge as part of a network of eight or more tied to its Chase card program from late 2027. Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville come first, followed by Denver, Love Field, DCA and Orlando. After assigned seating, it signals a move upmarket that matters to corporate clients choosing Southwest.
American cancelled up to 1,000–2,000 mistake-fare award tickets on October 9, well past the 72 hours its contract language allowed. Advisors should warn clients against relying on error fares, since cancellations and disputes remain possible.
Canadian trips to US rise a sixth month, still well below 2024
Canadian return trips to the US grew for a sixth straight month, but September air trips were still 18.7% below 2024 and car trips 31.1% lower. The recovery is real but partial, so expect softer cross-border demand and more availability on transborder routes than in 2024. Advisors working Canada-origin leads should plan around that gap.
Mumbai keeps winter slots, delaying Navi Mumbai shift
Mumbai Airport will let airlines keep their winter slots, deferring the international move from Terminal 2 to Navi Mumbai until March 2027. Current terminal arrangements hold through the winter schedule, so India-bound itineraries face no disruption now. The shift is planned for the summer 2027 season, so advisors should plan connections and ground transport for that season accordingly.
