Kaub falls below zero; Riviera reroutes and cancels Rhine sailings
The Rhine Gorge is impassable for Riviera's George Eliot and Geoffrey Chaucer, with Kaub at -6 cm. Riviera has rerouted the Sept. 30 sailings and cancelled two earlier departures. More October sailings are already affected, and forecast improvement is only modest.
What it means for advisors: Check every Rhine booking now, whatever the line, since vessel drafts differ. Clients should hear about lost Gorge scenery from you before they hear it on board. Know the refund and compensation policy for each supplier before clients call.
- Audit October Rhine departures across all suppliers
- Set expectations on Gorge scenery and coach or reroute substitutions
- Confirm each line's refund and compensation terms
"Is it still smart to book?" Framing the low-water conversation
Mainstream outlets are now running consumer-facing pieces on drying rivers. They cite record lows at Budapest and Kaub and Viking Ullur's grounding and evacuation in July. Clients holding nonrefundable deposits will ask about it.
A useful frame separates disruption from danger: itineraries change and cruises get rerouted, but the coverage is mostly about inconvenience. Advisors should have three talking points ready: travel protection, flexible-date options, and lower-risk seasons or itineraries for 2027 sales. A first-hand account in TravelPulse of a Danube cruise hit by low water gives useful colour on what clients actually experience.
AmaWaterways reveals AmaMaya for the Mekong, debuting January 2027
AmaWaterways has unveiled AmaMaya, a 120-guest, 60-stateroom ship sister to AmaDara, due on the Mekong in January 2027. It adds capacity on the Charms and Riches of the Mekong itineraries. Selling points include a Chef's Table specialty restaurant and a wellness host.
For advisors, this is a fresh Vietnam and Cambodia product with sellable early-2027 departures, and a low-water-proof alternative to Europe for clients nervous about Rhine and Danube conditions.
American Ranger christened; three more ACL newbuilds due in 2027
American Cruise Lines has christened American Ranger, its third 2026 launch and fourth Patriot Class ship, on the Hudson River. American Mariner, American Navigator and American Anthem are due in 2027.
The 2027 Hudson program moves to roundtrip Albany with New York City stops and a Statue of Liberty pass. Most 2026 departures are sold out, a sign of firm US river demand. Advisors should lean on the new itinerary and capacity for 2027 inventory.
Riviera hires Donna Kurtz to lead North America MICE sales
Riviera Travel River Cruises has named Donna Kurtz as MICE sales director for North America. She previously grew Scenic and Emerald charter sales to over $40M.
The hire points to a dedicated charter, incentive and group channel in the US. Advisors with group business have a new contact and may see more group-friendly terms, and the appointment underlines Riviera's push for US advisor share.
