Southwest Rewrites Rapid Rewards; Nobody Starts 2027 With Companion Pass
Southwest's Rapid Rewards reboot takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold. A new Platinum tier carries the unlimited Companion Pass, and nobody holds that pass at the start of 2027.
For advisors, this means resetting expectations with frequent Southwest corporate travelers and with clients who rely on the pass. Earning paths for both status and the pass change. Some perks can be locked in before year-end, so review client status and pass positions now rather than in January. The Points Guy's Q&A on the changes is the place to check specifics.
United Reworks Premier Qualification, Dropping Segments and Raising the 1K Bar
United is changing Premier status: flight segments no longer count, and the 1K threshold goes up. One report puts the cost of elite status as much as 45.5% higher. The sources cover this only briefly, so confirm the exact thresholds before advising clients.
Corporate road warriors may need more spend to hold 1K or other tiers. Review clients' status trajectories now, along with any corporate-deal assumptions that depend on elite benefits, while there is still time to act before year-end.
United and Air Canada Add Six Transborder Routes for Summer 2027; Air Canada Trims Five US Routes
United and Air Canada are expanding their transborder joint venture with six new routes for summer 2027. United adds Newark–St. John's (YYT), Denver–Ottawa and Denver–Quebec City. Air Canada adds Louisville–Toronto, Indianapolis–Montréal and a Newark route. Air Canada also drops several US routes.
For Canada-bound corporate accounts, that means new nonstop options and new codeshare and JV-fare availability. It also means lost service on some existing routes, so check clients' current routings against the cuts before summer 2027 bookings are made.
Delta Adds Boston–Reykjavik, Venice, Athens and Austin–Paris for 2027
Delta is adding transatlantic nonstops for 2027: seasonal Boston–Reykjavik, plus Boston–Venice, Detroit–Athens and Austin–Paris. The Iceland route flies a 757 with Premium Select and no lie-flat seat, which limits its appeal for corporate travelers who need to sleep.
Austin–Paris is the most corporate-relevant of the four, a new market from a growing business hub. The others lean leisure. Separately, Delta has announced changes to Delta One, but the only source is a headline in a weekly recap with no detail. Verify specifics before comparing it with United Polaris for long-haul clients.
Lufthansa Formalizes Throwaway-Ticketing Exception, With Proof Required
Section 3.3.4 of Lufthansa's conditions of carriage now gives Germany-linked tickets a documented way to skip a segment without repricing. The traveler must show that plans changed after booking.
Advisors cannot file the form on a client's behalf without a signed power of attorney. That matters for fare-rule compliance, and for advising travelers whose plans shift mid-trip. Treat it as a narrow exception with an evidence requirement. It does not make skipping segments acceptable in general.
Austrian A320 Diverts to Sofia Under Fighter Escort After Bomb Threat
An Austrian Airlines A320 operating OS82 from Tel Aviv to Vienna landed in Sofia, Bulgaria, under fighter escort after a bomb threat. The diversion follows a recent attempted hijacking of a flydubai flight bound for Israel.
Advisors with travelers on Israel itineraries should plan for delay and diversion risk and review duty-of-care protocols, including how to reach travelers and rebook them if a flight lands somewhere unplanned.
Disruption Hotels and Denied Boarding: Document Everything
Two passenger-rights cases carry T&E lessons. American's policy promises an approved hotel, or reimbursement of reasonable costs if no voucher is supplied. But a voucher guarantees nothing about quality, and one passenger reported roaches. Advisors can tell corporate travelers they may book their own hotel, and should document the reimbursement terms.
On United, a doctor who says he arrived before the 15-minute cutoff was bumped. He received a $1,083.80 involuntary denied-boarding check and says he lost about nine hours. It is a single anecdote, but it argues for recording gate arrival times whenever a client is stranded.
Hyatt Opens Member-to-Member Transfers; Chase Ink Preferred 100K Bonus Persists
World of Hyatt now allows member-to-member point transfers online and has added temporary earn offers with Air Canada. That makes it easier to pool points for corporate travel.
For small-business clients funding travel, the Chase Ink Business Preferred 100,000-point bonus is still available. The card earns 3x on travel and advertising and shares transfer partners with Sapphire Reserve. A U.S. Bank credit could also cover award-search subscriptions at little cost.
Separately, The Plaza in New York is closing. The source gives only a headline, so confirm dates before contacting clients with existing bookings.
