Low water reshapes Rhine and Danube sailings, and the protections around them

Riviera Travel has cancelled three October Danube sailings and revised nine Rhine departures, while insurers diverge on whether those changes are covered. Riviera's owners are also weighing a sale, and Tauck and AmaWaterways announced products that sit outside the Rhine and Danube.

Riviera cancels Danube sailings, reroutes Rhine, launches Holiday Guarantee

Riviera Travel says nine Rhine departures ran revised, with a Moselle swap replacing Rüdesheim, Speyer and Strasbourg. Three October Danube sailings were cancelled. Affected guests receive future travel vouchers, and a new Riviera Holiday Guarantee lets travellers move or take a refund.

For advisors, the commercial point is that compensation differs by supplier. Check autumn and Christmas Markets Rhine and Danube bookings now, contact clients before the line does, and set expectations on substitutions. Where a client's sailing is on a line with a weaker policy than Riviera's, say so before low water forces the question.

Insurance responses to low water are not uniform

Travel Guard covers trip cancellation only if the line cancels for insufficient water. It may not respond if the line simply switches guests to coaches. Allianz may treat a line-documented itinerary change as a cancellation. Trip interruption depends on whether the substitute itinerary uses the same mode of transport.

For advisors selling Christmas Markets and late-season sailings, the policy should be matched to the risk. Keep the line's written notices of any itinerary change, since they are the documentation a claim will turn on. Record what was explained to the client at the point of sale.

Riviera Travel's owners weigh a sale

The Times reports that Riviera's owners are considering their options. The river market is projected at about $10bn by 2030. A sale could change ownership, distribution and trade terms at a major UK-focused river line that is already handling low-water fallout.

Details are limited, and nothing has been confirmed. Advisors with Riviera business should watch for any changes to policies or commissions rather than act now.

Tauck adds wellness departures on the Seine; AmaWaterways heads to Peru

Tauck's first wellness river departures sail on ms Serene on July 28 and Oct. 11, 2027, hosted by Nikki Polos. Five departures across more itineraries follow in 2028. The programming is optional and does not change the base itinerary or price structure. It gives advisors a differentiated product for wellness-minded luxury clients, and Seine itineraries avoid the Rhine and Danube low-water exposure.

Separately, AmaWaterways is expanding into Peru with an itinerary that includes the Machu Picchu train journey. Details are thin, but it adds a high-ticket product beyond the classic rivers for luxury clients.
