Southwest rewrites Rapid Rewards; unlimited Companion Pass moves to a new Platinum tier
Southwest's Rapid Rewards overhaul takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold. The unlimited Companion Pass is now tied to a new Platinum tier that no one holds at launch.
For advisors with frequent Southwest corporate travelers, the work is explaining what changes and what to lock in before year-end. Check which clients depend on Companion Pass benefits and confirm their status position before the switch. Southwest is also moving upmarket, with premium lounges and assigned seating. Leaked messaging from the CEO tells employees to keep the hospitality and accept that everything else can change.
Clients should not assume current status carries over benefit for benefit. Review the program FAQ with them before they plan 2027 travel around the pass.
JetBlue BlueFirst is on sale for Dec. 8; Air France La Première reaches Boston and Newark
Two premium products are now sellable, with caveats.
JetBlue BlueFirst debuts Dec. 8 on BOS–FLL, followed by LGA–FLL. Only some frequencies on each route will carry the cabin at first, so check equipment flight by flight. BlueFirst passengers get no BlueHouse lounge access unless they already qualify through a card or pass.
Air France brings its new 777 La Première and business cabins to Boston on Nov. 19, 2026 and Newark on Feb. 1, 2027. Aircraft with the new cabins also have Starlink Wi-Fi. This is relevant for premium transatlantic clients and SkyTeam award bookers.
2027 route additions: United and Air Canada across the border, Delta across the Atlantic
United and Air Canada add six US–Canada routes for summer 2027. United's additions are EWR–St. John's, DEN–Ottawa and DEN–Quebec City. Air Canada adds SDF–YYZ, IND–YUL and a Newark route. Air Canada also cuts five US routes, so clients booked on those need rebooking options.
Delta will fly BOS–Reykjavik daily from Apr. 12 to Oct. 30, 2027, on a 757 with Premium Select and no lie-flat seats. It also adds BOS–Venice, DTW–Athens and AUS–Paris CDG. That is new competition for transatlantic corporate and leisure traffic from Boston, Detroit and Austin.
Advisors should review 2027 cross-border and transatlantic itineraries now, especially for clients tied to the cut routes.
Overseas arrivals to the US fall 4.3% in September, led by Western Europe
Overseas arrivals were 2.7 million in September, down 4.3% year over year. That follows a roughly 12% drop in August, and year-to-date arrivals are down 5.7%. Western Europe drove the decline.
Weaker inbound demand can soften pricing power on transatlantic routes and in gateway-city hotels. It also bears on inbound corporate travel planning. Advisors negotiating rates or planning inbound trips may find more leverage than earlier in the year.
Servicing tips: United upgrade refunds and JAL partner-award changes
United paid upgrades are described as nonrefundable, but travelers report getting cash or an electronic travel certificate back by asking. Results vary, and one traveler lost a $700 upgrade. Don't promise a refund up front.
JAL changed a flight by five minutes, and a traveler holding a Finnair Avios award moved the booking online to another date, switched to Haneda and got A350 suites at no extra cost. The ticketing airline handles the free reissue. Results vary by partner, and online changes are not always supported, but it is worth trying on partner awards where JAL operates.
