Oct. 27 election brings Iran and Hezbollah warnings
Israel is preparing for a possible Iranian missile attack timed to the morning of the Oct. 27 vote, aimed at frightening voters and disrupting the election. Defense Minister Katz has warned Hezbollah it will take a severe blow, and face an expanded permanent security zone in Lebanon, if it joins an Iranian attack. Lebanon says Washington will not back an expanded Israeli security zone if Hezbollah avoids provocations.
For advisors: these are warnings and contingency planning, not confirmed events. Clients traveling to Israel around Oct. 27, or booked for November, should have flexible fares and trip insurance that covers airspace closures. Confirm each supplier's change and cancellation terms now, and keep a plan for rerouting or extending stays.
Jerusalem dining: Piccolino closes, Miyoka opens
Piccolino, the 35-year-old Mehadrin dairy Italian restaurant in Nachlaot, closes at the end of October. It was known for its Friday buffet and Music Square courtyard. Remove it from Jerusalem dining recommendations and from any Shabbat or Friday-lunch itineraries. For trips that already include it, note that the last day is the end of October.
Miyoka is a new mehadrin sushi, ramen and wok restaurant on the Mamilla promenade near Jaffa Gate, certified by Badatz Yoreh De'ah. It sits in a Mamilla cluster that is mostly meat and Italian, so it adds a different option in a central location. It is open Friday until before Shabbat and Saturday night after Shabbat.
Israel-Albania aviation deal as Israeli visitors pass 100,000
Israel and Albania signed an aviation agreement on Oct. 12. Israeli tourism to Albania has grown from about 7,000 visitors in 2023 to more than 100,000 in 2026, and the deal should help expand flights.
For advisors: Albania is a new and growing option for frum clients. Chabad Albania offers pre-booked kosher dining at the BESA Center restaurant and Shabbat meals in Tirana. Dining must be arranged in advance, so build that into any itinerary.
Italy educator trip canceled over Gaza declaration demand
A study trip to Reggio Emilia, Italy for 68 US Jewish educators was canceled after the hosts discussed requiring participants to sign a declaration disavowing Israel's actions in Gaza. The mayor has since expressed regret.
For advisors planning Jewish group or educator travel to Italy, ask hosts in writing whether any political or declaratory conditions apply before committing the group. Also factor in security and screening concerns.
PopUp Bagels Ardmore: a narrow hechsher
The new PopUp Bagels in Ardmore, PA, in the Philadelphia suburbs, holds a limited National Kosher Supervision certificate. It covers only the bagels, which are pareve and not Pas Yisroel, and the plain and scallion cream cheeses, which are not Cholov Yisroel. Everything else is not kosher, and nothing is certified for Passover.
Clients with stricter standards should be told the exact scope before they eat there. Don't list it as a general kosher stop.
