Nepal's autumn: flood-cut Manaslu Circuit and no client summits
A Budhi Gandaki flood washed out bridges and isolated the Chum Valley, and some trekkers were airlifted out. Operators including The Mountain Company have cancelled autumn Manaslu and Tsum departures and rerouted clients to Upper Mustang and Thorong La. Tashi Lapcha is also damaged, adding to the Langtang flood in August.
The climbing side is no better. Excess snow and a lack of fixed ropes stopped commercial teams on Manaslu and Dhaulagiri. Seven Summit Treks closed its Dhaulagiri expedition with a rare public statement, amid accusations that the rope-fixers lost motivation. Kangchenjunga and Lhotse permits have not yet been issued.
For advisors: clients booked on Manaslu or Tsum need a rebook or refund conversation now. Expect tighter Annapurna Circuit availability over the next few weeks. Clients on 8,000m expeditions may raise refund disputes, so check each operator's policy.
Super El Niño is a booking risk the trade isn't discussing
Adventure.com argues the industry is under-discussing a building super El Niño. Sea-surface temperatures are about 3°C above baseline, and the event has not yet peaked. Peru flooding has already restricted Machu Picchu access, and Indonesia has wildfires.
The likely exposure covers Inca Trail and Machu Picchu itineraries, Galápagos reef and wildlife, Southeast Asian and Amazon fire seasons, and flight and ground logistics.
For advisors: review travel insurance and cancel-for-any-reason options for clients on 2026-27 departures in affected regions. Build flexibility into itineraries and brief those clients before conditions worsen.
Intrepid adds 80-plus trips and 50 destinations for 2027
Intrepid is adding more than 80 new trips for 2027 across 50 new destinations. The range includes 15 family trips, 5 Indigenous-led itineraries, new walking and cycling trips, a Kenya/Samburu safari and Wild Canada & Alaska. New regions include Guanacaste, Matagalpa, Yukon and Mexico.
The release says close-to-home travel is growing, with Canada trips up 46% year on year. That supports pitching North and Central America to adventure clients.
For advisors: these are new products, so early selling for 2027 gives first-mover access to small-group departures.
Antarctica 2026-27 is over 90% sold; new small ships arrive
AdventureSmith reports that top Antarctica operators are above 90% occupancy, and most now use airline-style dynamic pricing. Advisors should not wait for last-minute deals and should move on holds now.
New supply includes the hybrid-electric Magellan Discoverer (December, Punta Arenas air cruise) and the Grand Ocean Spray in Galápagos. The Greg Mortimer replaces Lindblad's Sea Bird and Sea Lion in Alaska in 2027. The Denali Park Road reopens after six years, and Alaska Airlines adds Seattle–Athens and Seattle–Paris routes in May.
Backroads joins USTOA, pitching active travel to a wider audience
Backroads, the premium small-group walking, biking and hiking operator, has joined USTOA as an active member. Its portfolio includes active cruises through AmaWaterways and Silversea. The move signals a formal push on trade partnerships and advisor support.
Its CXO says active travel now reaches a much wider audience, driven by e-bikes and wellness demand. That gives advisors a sales angle for clients who are less athletic and would not call themselves marathoners.
Bruce Poon Tip's 'Communityship' reframes G Adventures' future
G Adventures founder Bruce Poon Tip will publish Communityship on Nov. 24. The book discusses moving the company from a founder-led model to shared ownership.
It offers context on the leadership and culture direction of the world's largest small-group adventure operator. There is little immediate commercial impact, but it could be a hook for advisor storytelling and co-marketing.
