Low water persists on the Rhine and Danube; Riviera reviews itineraries
Low water has continued into mid-October. Kaub on the Rhine sits around 0.5 ft and Maxau remains shallow. On the Danube, pinch points near Budapest and Pfelling are causing trouble. Recent rain has done little to lift levels.
Lines are swapping ships, converting some legs to coach and rewriting itineraries. One example is Amsterdam–Basel becoming a Netherlands–Belgium routing. Riviera is reviewing eight Rhine itineraries and has cancelled two Danube sailings. Many lines are offering future cruise credits rather than refunds, often at short notice.
Forecast rain and cooler weather may help before Christmas Markets sailings, but advisors shouldn't count on it. Contact clients on upcoming departures now, set expectations on possible coach segments, and confirm each line's current notification and compensation terms.
Lines pledge to absorb low-water costs as CroisiEurope shrinks its Danube fleet
At CLIA's London event, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Riviera, VIVA, APT and others said they will not pass disruption costs to clients. That covers hotels, coaches and alternate ports. Lines are also planning deployments two to three years out, with sister ships positioned at route ends.
Capacity is shifting at the same time. CroisiEurope is cutting its Danube fleet from four ships to one for 2027, and the cut is mirrored in 2028. Advisors selling 2027–28 Danube departures should check which operators still have depth on the river. They should also be ready to explain to clients what the cost pledges do and don't cover.
Refund or credit? Advisors push back on itinerary-change policies
AmaWaterways confirms it may offer future cruise credits instead of refunds when an itinerary is altered. Advisors say the client conversations are difficult, and policies differ from line to line.
The practical response is to set expectations at booking, document the fine print, and know each supplier's stance on cruise-to-coach switches. The cost-absorption pledges and the credit-first approach are not the same promise. Clients who hear "we won't charge you more" may assume "we'll refund you," so spell out the difference in writing before departure.
Riverside Mahler arrives in 2028 with Main-Danube Canal capacity and an 18% discount
Riverside Luxury Cruises has opened 2028 sales with a new ship, Riverside Mahler, debuting in May 2028. Main-Danube Canal departures rise to 12, up from 2 in 2027. The line positions the added capacity as backup for low-water ship swaps.
An 18% early-booking discount applies to bookings made before June 30, 2027. That gives advisors a price hook, plus a resilience argument for clients wary of low-water disruption. Ask about the swap policy in practice before leaning on that claim.
AmaWaterways adds Machu Picchu extension to Magic of Colombia
AmaWaterways has launched its first Peru program, a 5-night/6-day post-cruise land extension to Machu Picchu. It starts in April 2027 on select sailings and goes to every post-cruise Magic of Colombia departure in 2028.
There are two tiers. Boutique and Iconic options, using Belmond Hiram Bingham or Inca Rail, are priced at about £4,081 and £6,620 on top of the cruise, which starts at £5,176. That is a high-ticket add-on for luxury clients and a new South America upsell for river specialists. Check commission treatment on the land portion.
Tauck adds Seine wellness departures; 2028 river bookings open this month
Tauck is adding two wellness-themed Rendezvous on the Seine departures in 2027, on July 28 and Oct 11. It plans five wellness departures in 2028 across more itineraries.
Tauck is also opening 2028 river cruises for preliminary booking later this month, so advisors can reserve early for clients with fixed travel windows.
Riviera courts the trade; Scenic builds a themed Christmas Markets sailing
Riviera Travel is about to launch Riv Rewards, a trade loyalty scheme, according to its agent committee meeting. It also previewed 2027 peak campaigns and 2028 products and reported strong trade growth. Agents welcomed the CEO's attendance during the disruption, though the discussion was UK-focused.
Separately, Scenic has put country singer Terri Clark on its 2027 Danube Christmas Markets cruise. The sailing departs Budapest on Dec 14, 2027 aboard Scenic Jade, which carries about 163 guests. It is a niche themed departure, but a ready hook for country-music clients and groups.
