Entry rules and safety flags reshape the East and South Africa booking checklist

Kenya confirmed an imported Ebola case while WHO advises no travel restrictions, and its ETA now requires separately purchasable health insurance. In South Africa, xenophobic unrest in Durban and Soweto and a Lion's Head robbery put routing and activity safety back on the advisor's desk.

Kenya: imported Ebola case, and a new insurance requirement on the ETA

Kenya has confirmed an imported Bundibugyo Ebola case in Nairobi, a fatal one that arrived via Uganda from the DRC. The WHO advises against travel restrictions, and Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda remain open. Expect client questions. Have the WHO position ready and watch for changes in insurer or supplier policies.

Separately, every Kenya-bound client now needs a valid Inbound Travel Health Insurance policy linked to their ETA. A court has upheld the requirement. The policy can be bought through eCitizen before the ETA application, and the system detects it automatically. Add it to pre-departure checklists and pricing, and check how it sits alongside clients' own travel insurance.

  • Ebola: WHO advises no travel restrictions; Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda open
  • ETA: mandatory inbound health insurance, purchasable separately
  • Action: update checklists and client talking points

Unrest in Durban and Soweto: check transfers and hotel locations

Arson, looting and gunfire hit the Durban CBD, where 14 vehicles were torched and the US Consulate issued an alert to avoid the area. In Soweto, 10 cars were torched. Home Affairs withdrew its asylum directive on 9 October, but tensions may persist with local elections approaching.

For clients transiting Johannesburg or Durban, confirm transfer routes and hotel locations now. Avoid CBD and township-adjacent routing, and monitor consulate alerts through the weekend.

Lion's Head robbery exposes Table Mountain Park safety gap

Two tourists and their guide were robbed at night on Lion's Head, and a 30-year-old man has been arrested. According to Take Back Our Mountains, Table Mountain National Park currently has no Visitor Safety Rangers or night-shift safety staff. Steer clients away from unguided or evening hikes, and brief guides on timing until patrols are restored.

Arrivals up 11.7% as capacity grows on key routes

South Africa's international arrivals rose 11.7% in January to August 2026, to 7.58 million, with African markets up 13.4%. The Western Cape is capturing most of the growth. Expect tighter peak-season availability and more pricing power for lodges and city hotels, so book festive and shoulder-season inventory early.

Capacity is also growing. Virgin Atlantic flies the A350-1000 on Johannesburg–Heathrow daily from 25 October, and frequency rises to 10 a week from 13/14 December, which adds festive seats and Heathrow connections. Airlink's new Cape Town–Mauritius service flies Tuesdays and Fridays, removing the Johannesburg connection for Cape-plus-beach itineraries.

Supplier moves: Country Hotels sold, LekkeSlaap changes hands

Ipic Properties has acquired Country Hotels, 16 properties and 638 rooms across the Western and Northern Cape. These include Tankwa Lodge, Orange River Rafting Lodge and the Kakamas, Upington and Kuruman hotels. Names, managers and staff are retained, but confirm contracted rates and commission terms with the group.

A consortium including FirstRand co-founders has bought LekkeSlaap, a 40,000-property local accommodation platform, with plans for technology investment and Southern Africa expansion. It is a possible competing channel for self-catering, and a possible partner.

Gigiri adds 587 rooms near Nairobi's UN complex

US$42m of new hotel supply is arriving in Gigiri as the UN expands its Nairobi headquarters, adding 587 rooms. That gives advisors more inventory for Nairobi pre- and post-safari stays and possible rate competition. Limuru Road congestion remains a caveat, so build transfer timings with a buffer.

Trade-show registrations delayed; KAZA funds community tourism

SA Tourism has not yet opened hosted-buyer applications for Meetings Africa (22–24 February 2027) or registrations for Africa's Travel Indaba (10–13 May 2027, Durban). An update is due next week.

In conservation funding, a GIZ-funded KAZA programme will link 50 small businesses to nature-based tourism across Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Angola. The near-term commercial effect is modest, but it may shape lodge procurement and community-benefit credentials for sustainability-minded clients.
