Houthi strike destroys Saudia A320 at Riyadh; carriers suspend service
A Houthi strike at Riyadh airport destroyed a Saudia Airbus A320, and several airlines have suspended flights to the city. Skift reports that more than a quarter of Saudi flights have been disrupted, with roughly 39% of Riyadh departures cancelled. The Houthis have warned airlines to avoid Saudi airspace, so further disruption is possible.
What to do: Identify travelers booked to or through Riyadh and rebook or hold them. Review travel-risk and duty-of-care policies for Saudi Arabia. Delta's planned Oct. 23 Atlanta–Riyadh launch and Riyadh Air's expansion are now uncertain, so avoid committing clients to new Saudi routings until carriers confirm their plans.
Record jet fuel keeps fares high without lifting airline profits
US jet fuel hit an all-time monthly high in September and sits near $4.50 a gallon. Carriers are holding fares high, but Skift reports that the fuel bill is absorbing the revenue gains, so profits are not rising with them.
Commercial read: Expect continued fare pressure, possible surcharges and tougher corporate-deal negotiations. Q3 earnings begin with Delta on Friday, and carrier commentary on fuel and corporate demand should show how much room there is to negotiate.
Basic business-class fares strip lounge access and changes
United's lowest Polaris fares and Delta's lowest Delta One fares now exclude lounge access, seat selection and changes. JetBlue is reportedly planning similar fares.
Policy impact: A T&E policy that mandates the lowest fare in premium cabins may now deliver a stripped-down product with no flexibility. Check fare families before booking, and consider updating policy language so travelers don't lose lounge access or change rights by default.
Amex reshuffles Centurion Lounges; Philadelphia closes Oct. 16
Amex announced a large Centurion Lounge expansion with near-term costs. The Philadelphia lounge closes Oct. 16 and stays closed until the end of 2027. Newark slips to 2027 but grows to 30,000 sq ft. A second Heathrow lounge in Terminal 5 and a larger Houston lounge arrive in 2028.
Advisors with premium-card clients routing through Philadelphia should reset lounge expectations in itineraries now.
American and Southwest make fleet moves aimed at business travelers
American plans Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire mainline fleet of more than 1,000 jets, including 737s, 777s and 787s, starting in early 2027. Wi-Fi stays free for AAdvantage members. That strengthens American's long-haul pitch to road warriors and sharpens the comparison with Delta, which is not using Starlink.
Southwest is reportedly weighing Boeing 787s, probably used, as its first widebodies. The timeline is about three years and could mean up to a dozen long-haul destinations. No decision has been made, so treat it as a long-range signal for corporate deal leverage.
Air France adds Nashville and San Diego, drops Denver
Air France will start three-weekly A350 service to Nashville on May 14, 2027, and San Diego on May 17, 2027. Seasonal Denver flights end Oct. 10. United starts daily Denver–Paris CDG on May 27, 2027.
Denver-based accounts need alternatives for the gap before United's launch. The new routes improve SkyTeam joint-venture options for Nashville and San Diego clients.
Dubai luxury hotels add perks rather than cut rates
Atlantis and other Dubai luxury hotels are holding published rates and offering resort credits and upgrades, mostly aimed at residents, as post-war demand stays weak.
For Gulf corporate rate negotiations, weak demand is leverage best spent on value-adds such as credits, upgrades and amenities rather than headline discounts.
Etihad's commercial chief departs abruptly
Etihad's chief revenue and commercial officer, Arik De, has left abruptly, and no replacement has been named. Any change in pricing, distribution or corporate-sales priorities is speculative at this stage.
Advisors with Etihad corporate agreements should keep in touch with their account managers and watch for changes.
