TUI's Danube coach substitutions become a refund dispute
TUI River Cruises has replaced Danube sailings with coach trips as water levels fell. The BBC and The Independent report that passengers who paid thousands are being refused refunds. TUI's position is that its booking terms allow an itinerary to be completed by coach.
The dispute is escalating publicly, and some passengers are threatening small-claims action. For advisors, the commercial point is the wording of low-water clauses. Before autumn Danube departures, check each operator's terms on substituting coaches, hotel swaps and how many hours clients may spend on the road. Put those expectations to clients in writing before they travel. Doing so lowers the risk of complaints and chargeback exposure once a ship stops sailing.
Low water persists into October, and lines are still funding joint marketing
Low water on the Rhine and Danube has carried into October. A UK agency head told TTG the Rhine riverbed is visible and that repeated heatwaves continue. A Vancouver writer's Rhine sailing was rerouted to the Netherlands and Belgium a week before departure.
The disruption looks systemic, not isolated. Expect more re-routings and swaps to other rivers, and Christmas Markets sailings are at risk. Lines are still funding joint marketing, which is a co-operative funding opportunity for agents.
Advisors should contact November and December Rhine and Danube clients now, before a re-routing notice does. Canadian broadcasters CP24 and CTV are also running guidance on what clients should do when water levels affect a cruise.
Riviera Travel launches tiered 'Riv Rewards' for agents
Riviera Travel has launched Riv Rewards, a tiered loyalty programme for trade partners. Agents earn one point per £1 of commissionable revenue on top of regular commission, counting bookings from 1 October 2026.
The four tiers unlock fams, free river cruises for two and campaign-booster bonuses. UK advisors enrol by reaching Passionista status. The scheme changes Riviera's incentive position against other river specialists, so agents who split volume across suppliers should weigh whether concentrating bookings with Riviera now earns more.
Scenic and Emerald open early access to 2028 river programs
Scenic and Emerald Cruises have opened early access to their 2028 river and land journeys for advisors. Super Earlybird pricing and preferred suite and date selection come ahead of general release.
New product includes a redesigned Lyon–Tarascon South of France cruise and new Riviera, Loire, Brittany and Munich extensions. Emerald adds Danube Capitals & Crossroads, running Passau to Belgrade. The lower Danube routing gives advisors a possible alternative to pitch to low-water-sensitive clients. Advisors can lock in inventory now.
Colombia pitched as a river cruise alternative to Europe
The Australian Financial Review presents Colombia as a new river cruise destination to book, with Cartagena as a highlight. With Europe's water problems, it could appeal to repeat river clients looking for somewhere new.
