Southwest rewrites Rapid Rewards for 2027, with Icon Lounges to follow
From Jan. 1, 2027, Southwest replaces its A-List tiers with Silver, Gold and Platinum. Flight-count thresholds rise, points on top fares are cut, and credit-card bonuses stop counting toward the Companion Pass. Platinum bundles an unlimited Companion Pass. Partner awards are also coming.
Southwest is also moving upmarket with Chase-partnered Icon Lounges. Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville are named among 11 airports, with openings from late 2027, and a premium Chase card arrives next year.
For advisors, clients with Southwest status or a Companion Pass should have their 2026 activity and 2027 targets reviewed now. The tier math is harder, and the Companion Pass is much harder to earn through card spend.
EU border friction: Commission signals 'flexibility' on EES
Biometric Entry/Exit System checks have caused multi-hour queues since April. Member states lost the power to suspend checks in September, and airlines and airports are lobbying to get it back. A Commission official now says there will be 'flexibility', but no mechanism has been announced.
Advisors should build in longer connection times on Schengen arrivals and warn travelers about queues. ETIAS is postponed to at least 2027, and scam sites are selling fake waivers, so clients should not pay for one now.
Lufthansa carries extra fuel into Frankfurt as supply tightens
Pipeline maintenance and low Rhine levels are constraining fuel supply at Frankfurt. Lufthansa has ordered select inbound flights to carry extra fuel. FAA cautions on Saudi airspace add to existing Middle East disruption risk.
The practical risk is delays, rerouting and schedule changes on Europe and Gulf-corridor itineraries via FRA. Watch tight connections and keep alternates ready for time-critical business travelers.
American's network chief exits; a long-haul pivot may follow
American's head of network planning is out, and Nick Andersen takes over Nov. 1. Coverage suggests leadership wants to reverse the domestic-heavy retreat from LAX, ORD and JFK, with a widebody order reportedly near.
Nothing is confirmed on routes. Corporate programs negotiating with American should treat this as a signal that its footprint in major business markets and on long-haul routes could change, and factor it into deal timing.
Two points-account changes to act on: United's status match and Amex pooling
United has extended its 'Switch to Better Wi-Fi' status match for Delta and American elites through Oct. 22. Clients considering a move have days to apply.
Separately, Amex no longer automatically pools Membership Rewards points on new cards. Closing a card without first linking or transferring its points can forfeit them. Check Business Platinum and Blue Business Plus holders before any cancellation.
Premium product moves: Lufthansa fleet, BA A380 delay, JetBlue BlueFirst
Lufthansa retires the A340-600 on Oct. 18, with the last flight IAD-FRA. The first A350-1000 arrives at Munich in mid-November, with Allegris First, 49 business seats and 35 premium economy seats.
British Airways' A380 retrofit is running late, with the first aircraft not back until around the new year. Clients booked on winter A380s will get the old cabins, so set expectations.
JetBlue's BlueFirst domestic first class is now on sale for December travel, in a 2-2 recliner layout, with Mosaic upgrade rules published.
TSA halts gateside access expansion; Fragomen discloses data breach
TSA has suspended the planned 300-airport expansion of gateside access for non-travelers. Reports say approved visitors were turned away at DFW. Don't promise this access outside the original 13 pilot airports.
Immigration firm Fragomen has disclosed a breach of passport and Social Security data. Corporate mobility programs should ask providers what was exposed and revisit duty-of-care and data-protection conversations.
Rail and award deals: Certares backs European high-speed rail; SQ cuts awards 30%
Certares is committing $2.3 billion to European high-speed rail, backing a challenger to SNCF. Its founder expects more flight bans on short routes that compete with rail, a factor for T&E policy design in Europe.
Singapore Airlines' November Spontaneous Escapes cut awards 30%, including New York to Frankfurt premium economy at 39,900 miles. Booking runs Oct. 15-31, and the awards are non-changeable and non-cancellable.
