Low water on the Rhine, new hulls in the US, and AmaWaterways locks in 2027–2028

A record-low Rhine has grounded the Dutch Melody near Cologne ahead of Christmas Markets season, while American Cruise Lines christens its third new ship of 2026. AmaWaterways, meanwhile, relaunches its River of Rewards incentive and opens 2028 inventory with Smithsonian Journeys.

Rhine at record lows: Dutch Melody grounded near Cologne, Kaub unnavigable

The Rhine has dropped to record lows, stranding the Dutch river cruise ship Dutch Melody near Cologne. Kaub is unnavigable, and Maxau and Lobith are also too shallow, with no rain in the forecast.

For advisors, this points to likely re-routings, bus-bridge swaps and cancellations on fall Rhine sailings. Christmas Markets departures are close behind. It follows the July grounding of Viking's Ullur on the Danube, where 186 passengers were evacuated.

What to do now: check each supplier's low-water policy, confirm what clients are entitled to if an itinerary changes, and review travel-protection coverage on current and upcoming Rhine bookings. Contact clients on Rhine departures before they hear it from the cruise line.

  • Check supplier low-water and itinerary-change policies
  • Review client travel-protection coverage for Rhine bookings
  • Brief clients on fall and Christmas Markets Rhine departures early

American Cruise Lines christens American Ranger, its third new ship of 2026

American Cruise Lines christened American Ranger on the Hudson River. It is the third new ship the line has launched this year, which adds US new-build inventory for advisors to sell.

The pace signals ACL's momentum in US river and coastal cruising, a segment where it competes with Viking Mississippi. Advisors with domestic-leaning clients should check new-ship itineraries and 2027 pricing. A separate NZ Herald piece on ACL's 12-day Oregon Trail cruise shows the line's product reaching beyond the US market.

AmaWaterways brings back River of Rewards for 2027 and opens 2028 with Smithsonian Journeys

AmaWaterways has two items for advisors. Its River of Rewards incentive returns in 2027, which matters for river-specialist agencies weighing supplier preference and earnings. Source detail is thin, so confirm qualification terms and booking windows with AmaWaterways before building sales plans around it.

Separately, AmaWaterways and Smithsonian Journeys have unveiled a 2028 river cruise collection. That opens a long-lead selling window for affinity and educational groups. It also gives advisors a differentiated, culture-led product for clients who want more than a standard itinerary. Details beyond the announcement were limited, so verify itineraries and pricing directly.
