Low water tests river-cruise terms as 2027–28 inventory keeps opening

TUI's Danube coach swaps and no-compensation clause, plus Cruise Passenger's Waterwatch, show how low water is testing supplier terms, and a Nile grounding adds a smaller operations flag. Meanwhile AmaWaterways and Avalon keep selling 2027–28 product, from Smithsonian's 50-departure 2028 program to a women's-only Rhône sailing and an advisor hotel-night offer.

TUI's Danube coach swaps spark refund backlash

September Danube sailings were converted into hotel-and-coach trips, and TUI's terms reportedly bar compensation when the itinerary can still be completed by coach. That is a liability gap advisors should plan for now, not after a client complains.

What to do on autumn and winter bookings:

  • Read each supplier's low-water clause before you sell, and tell clients plainly what happens if ships can't sail.
  • Push travel insurance or flexible-fare options.
  • Note the El Niño forecasts cited in the research, which point to more risk.

Cruise Passenger's October Waterwatch tracks how each line is handling low water, including coach substitutions and ship swaps. Use it to decide which Rhine, Danube and Main departures to contact proactively. We only had an excerpt of that piece, so confirm line-specific details at the original before advising clients.

  • Review supplier low-water and itinerary-change clauses
  • Set expectations before booking
  • Offer insurance or flexible fares
  • Check Waterwatch for line-by-line responses

Smithsonian and AmaWaterways open 2028 program with 50 departures

Smithsonian Journeys and AmaWaterways have released their 2028 river program: 50 departures, including two new European itineraries (Holland/Belgium and Rhine/Moselle) priced from US$3,639 and US$4,759 per person. A 16-day Mekong land-and-cruise package starts at US$6,688, with departures in January, February and October.

This gives advisors with affinity and educational-travel clients an early-booking conversation well ahead of 2028. Because these are partner-branded charters, confirm commission terms through Smithsonian rather than assuming standard AmaWaterways rates.

Avalon advisor offer: free hotel night on 2027 Rhine and Burgundy & Provence

Avalon Waterways is offering advisors one free pre- or post-cruise hotel night on eligible 2027 Romantic Rhine and Burgundy & Provence sailings, using code P2P, for bookings from October 10 to 30. It stacks as a short-deadline hook for 2027 sales.

The promotion is run through the Australian market, so US advisors should confirm availability and eligibility before quoting it. A separate Avalon free-air and $3,000 savings promotion ended October 12.

AmaWaterways adds a women's-only Rhône sailing for 2027

AmaWaterways will run its first women's-only river cruise on AmaKristina, departing August 19, 2027. The Colours of Provence itinerary is hosted by winemaker Emmanuelle Bekkers, with optional Barcelona and Paris extensions.

It targets solo travelers, friend groups and multigenerational women, so advisors with those clients have a differentiated product and a possible group-booking angle. It is a single sailing, but it signals AmaWaterways moving further into affinity departures.

Nile ship Courchette refloated after grounding with 99 tourists

The Nile cruise ship Courchette ran aground at Kom Ombo carrying 99 tourists and was refloated. The incident was resolved quickly, with no confirmed injuries.

Groundings on the Luxor–Aswan route can still cause delays and itinerary changes, so advisors with Nile clients should watch for follow-up on delays or vessel inspection. Impact appears limited for now.
