Delta absorbs $6B fuel hit, says 20% fare hikes face 'limited resistance'
Delta lowered its 2026 profit outlook after saying it expects to absorb a $6 billion increase in fuel costs. Its CEO said fare increases of roughly 20% are meeting limited resistance. Skift's analysis adds that higher airfares are likely to stay, without a matching rise in airline profits. Holiday fares are running 23-31% above last year.
For advisors, the practical read is that fare relief is unlikely before holiday peaks. Corporate travel budgets set earlier in the year will be under strain. Tighten T&E forecasts now, and push clients to book early for peak dates rather than waiting for a pullback.
Houthi strike destroys Saudia A320 in Riyadh; Delta's Oct. 23 launch in doubt
A Saudia A320 was destroyed at Riyadh airport, and the Houthis have warned airlines to avoid Saudi Arabia. Lufthansa Group has suspended Riyadh service through Oct. 16, and Indian carriers have cancelled flights.
Delta plans to launch Atlanta–Riyadh on Oct. 23. Its corporate security has told its own employees not to travel there, and its CEO says safety will decide whether the launch goes ahead.
Advisors with Saudi-bound travelers should run duty-of-care checks now. Confirm who is in or headed to the country, and prepare rebooking options and contingency routings. Expect schedules to keep changing.
Gulf city hotels cut rates as corporate demand lags
Accor says its Gulf recovery is split. Resorts are strong, but city hotels in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are cutting rates by 15-20% to hold occupancy. Weak corporate demand also shows up in Riyadh and Jeddah.
That gives advisors room to negotiate Gulf corporate rates. The security situation in Riyadh is a reason to keep flexible cancellation terms in any deal.
Chicago hotel strike hits Marriott and Hilton properties before marathon
Unite Here Local 1 has struck six downtown Chicago hotels, including the Sheraton Grand Riverwalk and the Westin River North and Michigan Avenue, ahead of marathon weekend. The union says any of 46 hotels with expired contracts could walk out at any time, so up to 40 more could follow.
Advisors with Chicago group or corporate bookings should confirm service levels with each property. Line up alternates now and be ready to relocate guests if more hotels join the strike.
American ends international first class; Alaska ends fare-adjustment credits
American will stop selling Flagship First on Nov. 19. The retrofitted 777-300ER will carry 70 business suites. Business class becomes the top cabin on every major US carrier, so premium-cabin policies and fare-class mapping may need updating.
Alaska now requires travelers to cancel and rebook to get a lower fare. Alaska Wallet funds can't be used for Companion Fare or upgraded-seat purchases. Advisors who reprice after fare drops will need new procedures.
In related news, United and Delta sell basic business fares without lounge access, and JetBlue plans similar fares. Flag these to clients, since the cheapest premium fare may breach policy or lack expected benefits.
Air France adds Nashville and San Diego; Southwest eyes 787s for Europe
Air France will fly Paris–Nashville and Paris–San Diego from May 2027, three times weekly on the A350. It would be the first nonstop to Europe from Nashville, and it adds a second SkyTeam carrier in San Diego. Both are growing corporate markets, so the routes are worth factoring into 2027 rate negotiations.
Southwest is weighing a Boeing 787 order for long-haul Europe flights, possibly with lie-flat business class. That is years away and depends on a pilot contract. Watch it for future corporate deals, but don't plan around it yet.
Loyalty changes: Atmos accrual choice and AAdvantage Business bonus
Starting Jan. 1, 2027, Atmos Rewards members can choose how they accrue points: by distance, price paid or segments. Corporate flyers on cheap long routes or expensive short ones can pick whichever earns more, so advisors should help clients choose before the change.
Separately, the AAdvantage Business program is offering 15,000 bonus miles to new members through Oct. 31 with code GET15K. Redemption requires $5,000 in flight revenue from five travelers or the Citi AAdvantage Business card. Pass it to small-business clients who book American.
