Danube and Rhine hit record lows; lines scramble to reroute active sailings
Europe's heatwave has pushed the Danube and Rhine to levels not seen in years — the Danube at Budapest is within inches of its 2018 record low, Romania's stretch is at its lowest since 1996, and a vessel ran aground near Bonn on the Rhine. AmaWaterways, Viking, Uniworld, Avalon, Scenic, Emerald, Trafalgar and Riviera Travel are all now cancelling departures, swapping guests between sister ships, and substituting motorcoach transfers for river segments. One Hungarian operator already reports July bookings down 18%. For advisors, this is an active-itinerary problem, not a future-planning one: clients on Rhine/Danube sailings through peak summer need advance notice of possible ship swaps, rerouting, or hotel substitutions, and advisors should confirm each line's specific compensation and rebooking policy before clients call in.
Uniworld's biggest expansion yet: three new ships open for 2028 booking
Uniworld is entering its largest expansion to date, adding three vessels for 2028 — SS Helen and SS Clara for Europe's rivers, plus Mekong Mystique for Southeast Asia — growing the fleet to 22 ships alongside four more already confirmed for 2027. Bookings for 2028 sailings are open now, with early pricing including the 15-day Danube Grandeur from £5,549pp, an eight-day Holland & Belgium tulip-season sailing from £3,349pp, and the 15-day Mekong itinerary from £7,199pp. For advisors, this is a rare early-booking window: preferred cabins and dates on inaugural-year sailings tend to move fast, and locking clients in now ahead of the 2027/28 rush is worth flagging as the Christmas Markets selling season ramps up this fall.
American Cruise Lines opens new Arkansas River route; early sailings already sold out
American Cruise Lines has added a new nine-day Memphis-to-Tulsa itinerary on the Arkansas River, with Little Rock joining as a full-day overnight port of call for the first time. The 180-passenger riverboats begin the route this November, including a dedicated Thanksgiving-themed sailing. Three of the next four departures are already sold out. This is a fast-moving US river product: advisors with clients interested in domestic river cruising should check remaining inventory now rather than wait, since the early sell-through suggests limited late availability through the end of the year.
Riviera Travel dangles free cruise for advisors who finish training by Aug 31
Riviera Travel is entering every North American advisor who completes its Riviera Explorer training platform by August 31 into a drawing for a free river cruise with airfare — including those who've already finished the course. Completing the training also unlocks selling tools such as brochures and social media templates. With Christmas Markets season bookings ramping up, this is a low-effort, concrete incentive to get current on Riviera Travel's product before the fall push, and worth flagging to any team members who haven't yet completed supplier training modules this year.
