Tanzania extends Ebola health declaration to all arrivals
Every traveller entering Tanzania must now complete an online health declaration (QR code) and pass temperature screening at all entry points, a response to the DRC Ebola outbreak. Zanzibar runs its own form for arrivals from DRC, Uganda or Kenya.
What it means: add the declaration to pre-departure documents for northern-circuit safaris and Zanzibar extensions, and brief clients on possible screening delays. Combined itineraries routed via Kenya or Uganda are the most exposed, since they may trigger the Zanzibar form as well. Expect some client anxiety and have a short, factual explainer ready.
SARS holds the line on the 24-hour traveller declaration
Despite lobbying from the trade, SARS confirmed on October 14 that the electronic traveller declaration must be submitted within 24 hours of arrival or departure. Every traveller must complete it, even with nothing to declare, and bulk registration is not available. Email or SMS confirmation works only with South African numbers.
What it means: groups and FIT clients need a process. Ground handlers and advisors should agree who submits what, and when, so missed forms do not slow border processing. International clients without a local number will need another way to hold their confirmation.
International brands enter Kruger and iSimangaliso
Radisson will manage a lodge and camping resort at Charters Creek on Lake St Lucia under a 40-year PPP. A 20-year Kosi Bay concession is on offer, and Cape Vidal and Mantuma go to market this month. Tourvest and Dream Hotels have run facilities as interim operators since Ezemvelo withdrew in February.
Separately, IHCL has opened the six-key Taj Bush Lodge in Balule Nature Reserve, its first safari property in the region. The Taj Cape Town GM says two more Taj lodges will open in the coming months.
What it means: expect new inventory with GDS and loyalty distribution. Ask about commission terms and availability, particularly for Indian-market demand.
El Niño risk runs through March 2027
SADC is stepping up disaster preparedness, and the WMO flags drought, flooding and extreme heat risk for October 2026 to March 2027. El Niño usually brings hotter, drier conditions to southern Africa, though impacts vary.
What it means: for green-season travel, watch Victoria Falls flow, Okavango flood levels, road access and heat comfort. Build flexibility and travel insurance into December to March bookings, and set client expectations early rather than at the point of complaint.
Shark fatality closes beaches in KuGompo City
A 65-year-old open-water swimmer was killed on October 20. Buffalo City has closed both the Orient and Eastern beaches until further notice, with warnings at nearby beaches.
What it means: Eastern Cape coastal itineraries and Garden Route add-ons heading into the festive season may need to avoid water activities in the area. Check municipal updates before confirming beach-focused plans.
AFCON 2027 visa and Rwanda's F1 deal: demand signals, not yet bookings
East African ministers back a temporary common visa for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda during the June to July 2027 AFCON. The legal framework, eligibility and fees are unpublished. The window overlaps peak migration season in the Mara and Serengeti, so accommodation and charter pressure is likely.
Longer term, Rwanda's 10-year F1 deal for a Bugesera circuit, expected in the early 2030s, would need more wide-body and charter capacity from hubs such as Johannesburg, Nairobi and Addis Ababa. South Africa is still pursuing its own race. Neither is an immediate booking issue.
Kruger signs renewable power wheeling deal
SANParks will source more than 7.25 million kWh a year of renewable electricity for Kruger via Discovery Green and Ampli Energy, covering over 25% of demand. It is considering extending the model to other parks.
What it means: useful for sustainability messaging and for resilience against load-shedding in the park. There is no direct pricing or availability effect for clients.
