Entry rules, park fees and ground disruption reset the cost and risk of African itineraries

SANParks lifts conservation fees from 1 November while Kenya's mandatory state health cover and Kilimanjaro's wildfire closures change what clients pay and where they can go. South African unrest in Durban, Soweto and Pretoria adds a transit-risk watch.

SANParks raises conservation fees from 1 November

SANParks conservation fees rise from 1 November 2026 and apply through 31 October 2027, with the steepest increases falling on international visitors. Examples cited: Kruger R692 (about US$42) per day, Addo R565, Kgalagadi R662 and Cape of Good Hope R592.

What it means: quotes for self-drive and park-based itineraries need re-costing, particularly for travel from November and for 2027 trips already proposed to clients. Check whether proposals priced on the old schedule carry fee-adjustment language, and refresh net pricing before deposits are taken.

Kenya's mandatory health insurance, and a Tanzania wildfire disruption

Since 6 October, all travellers to Kenya must buy government-sanctioned travel health insurance, about US$44 and valid for one year, and show proof on arrival. Private or employer cover no longer satisfies the rule. Add it to pre-departure checklists and client cost summaries to avoid boarding or entry problems. Tanzania has a similar rule, which points to a regional trend.

Separately, the UK FCDO reports wildfires that, as of 6 October, have closed three Kilimanjaro routes: Rongai, Lemosho and Londorosi. Climbers are being redirected to alternative routes. Advisors with clients on the mountain in coming weeks should confirm the revised itinerary, route length and acclimatisation impact, plus insurance and operator responses.

Anti-foreigner unrest in South African cities: watch transit routing

Violence, torched vehicles and looting were reported between 6 and 9 October in Durban, Soweto and Pretoria, with protesters promising daily action. The unrest followed an asylum-related directive, which Home Affairs withdrew on 9 October.

The withdrawal may calm things, but that is not confirmed. Advisors routing clients through Johannesburg or Durban should monitor localised disruption and updated government travel advisories, and be ready to brief clients on ground transfers and timing.

Acquisitions keep reshaping safari ownership

Banyan has bought 70% of Newmark Hotels & Reserves. SUJÁN has acquired Zambia's Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro. Auberge has partnered on a nine-camp Tanzania portfolio.

Ownership changes can shift commission structures, contracting, rates and brand positioning. Advisors should re-check supplier agreements for affected properties and expect further consolidation.

Uganda's minister says Kenyan sellers outsell Ugandan operators on gorillas

At MKTE 2026, Uganda's tourism minister said Kenyan sellers outsell Ugandan operators on gorilla experiences, and called for a 'borderless East Africa'. This is talk, not policy. It does signal possible moves on cross-border packaging and distribution. Advisors selling combined Kenya–Uganda itineraries should watch for connectivity or partnership incentives.
