Hurricane Rachel closes Cabo; Brilliant Lady swaps in Ensenada
Cabo San Lucas has been closed since Sept 30 with no reopening date, and Virgin Voyages' Brilliant Lady replaced it with Ensenada on the Oct 3 sailing. It is the second consecutive Brilliant Lady sailing disrupted by a hurricane. Rachel is still active, at about 100 mph and strengthening near 19.4N 109.3W.
For advisors, expect further Cabo cancellations across lines serving the Mexican Riviera. Clients on affected sailings may ask about compensation or onboard credit, so check each line's policy and contact travelers before they ask. The NHC's Atlantic outlook is the separate basin; Rachel is the storm to watch for Pacific-side departures.
Virgin's Scarlet Lady breaks free in Rhodes after Mykonos closure
Strong winds closed Mykonos, so Virgin Voyages extended its stay in Rhodes and added Chania. On Sept 30 the ship then broke free from its lines in Rhodes and touched three small boats. No injuries were reported.
Greek Isles sailings are exposed to wind-driven port substitutions, and advisors should watch for further changes plus any inspection or schedule follow-up from the incident. Clients booked on Mykonos-heavy itineraries should be told that substitutions are possible.
Zaandam's 35-day voyage loses Fanning Island; Legend boards late in Barcelona
Holland America's 35-day Zaandam Hawaii/Tahiti voyage departing Oct 15 drops Tabuaeran (Fanning Island) because of adjustments to planned operating speed. Port times are also changing, and Raiatea and Bora Bora are swapped. Zaandam had propulsion problems in June, so a technical cause is possible, though the line cites only speed. On a long, high-value sailing, advisors should set expectations now and watch for more changes.
Separately, Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas is delaying its Oct 4 Barcelona boarding by two hours, to about 1 p.m., under an extreme-risk rain warning. No itinerary changes are confirmed. Tell clients on the 7-night Western Med sailing not to arrive early, as the terminal will not admit them.
Hero of the Seas gets The SpongeBob Musical for August 2027 debut
Royal Caribbean named The SpongeBob Musical as the headline show on Hero of the Seas, the first named product detail for the fourth Icon-class ship. It debuts in August 2027 on 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami, with a CocoCay call on every sailing.
The family-oriented show is a practical selling point for multigenerational groups. With launch about 10 months out, advisors can begin positioning early bookings.
Aroya enters UK market; Australia extends coastal exemption
Aroya Cruises is entering the UK market and plans its own three-ship fleet, with the second ship due in 2032/33. Advisors serving UK and international clients should note the new entrant, though there is no near-term commercial impact.
Separately, Australia extended its Coastal Trading Act exemption for cruise ships to 2028, and the transport minister says longer-term reforms are progressing. That gives lines regulatory certainty for Australian domestic itineraries, supporting continued Australia and NZ deployment, with little immediate effect on pricing.
