Nile Capacity Race: Viking, APT Bet Big on Egypt's Rebound

Egypt's tourism rebound is pulling river operators back to the Nile, with Viking scaling toward 12 ships by 2027 and APT reviving its Travelmarvel brand after a decade away. It's the day's one clear signal — and it's worth watching for advisors hunting alternatives to crowded European rivers.

Nile Cruising Booms as Viking and APT Add Capacity

Egypt's tourism rebound is reshaping the Nile river-cruise map. With visitor arrivals hitting a record 19 million in 2025 (up 21%), operators are racing to add ships rather than compete for a shrinking pool. Viking is scaling its Nile fleet toward 12 vessels by 2027 — a significant capacity build on a route that had been comparatively underserved relative to the Rhine and Danube. Meanwhile APT Travel Group has relaunched its value-tier Travelmarvel brand on the Nile after more than a decade away, debuting the refurbished 124-guest Travelmarvel Sirius on Luxor–Aswan sailings, with bookings already extending into 2028.

For advisors, this is a genuine inventory story, not just marketing: two operators at different price tiers (Viking's premium positioning vs. Travelmarvel's value play) are both committing hard to Egypt. Clients frustrated by saturated, low-water-plagued European itineraries now have a credible, well-capitalized alternative — and early booking curves suggest getting ahead of 2027–2028 demand is worth doing now.

  • Egypt tourism: 19M visitors in 2025, up 21% year-over-year
  • Viking: expanding Nile fleet to 12 ships by 2027
  • APT's Travelmarvel: returns to the Nile after 10+ years with Travelmarvel Sirius (124 guests, Luxor-Aswan)
  • Travelmarvel bookings already extending into 2028

Sourcing was thin today — one substantive item made the cut, so we've gone deep on it rather than padding out a full slate. Back tomorrow with a fuller board.
