Middle East Demand Craters as Marriott RevPAR Falls 43%, Advisory Reissued
Marriott's Q2 Middle East RevPAR fell 43% year-over-year, and the CFO flagged Q4 as more exposed still, since the region delivers 35% of its full-year revenue in that quarter. Construction delays are also pushing pipeline growth toward the low end of guidance. Compounding the picture, the State Department on Aug. 1 reissued an advisory urging Americans to reconsider travel to Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf hubs, citing flight cancellations and airspace closures tied to the regional conflict. For advisors with clients booked into Dubai, Doha or other Gulf ultra-luxury properties this fall, the combination of falling demand and an active advisory means contingency planning now — rebooking flexibility, alternate itineraries, and close monitoring of rate and availability shifts as the region heads into what is normally its peak season.
Agency Hotel Bookings Grew Nearly Double the OTA Rate
Commissionable hotel room nights booked through travel agencies rose 11.8% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, per Onyx CenterSource data — nearly double the roughly 6% growth logged by both Booking Holdings and Expedia over the same period. Average commission per night ticked up just 0.8%, meaning advisors delivered far more volume without hotels paying proportionally more, unlike OTA and metasearch channels where growth typically requires higher bids or paid placement. It's a clean data point to bring into conversations with hotel partners on commission terms and preferred-rate access, and a useful line for clients too: agency bookings aren't just service overlay, they're measurably outperforming self-serve channels on volume growth industry-wide.
Aman and Capella Extend the Independent-Luxury Map
Two flagship independent brands staked new ground this week. Aman opened Amanvari, its first Mexico property, on Baja California Sur's East Cape — an emerging alternative to a saturated Los Cabos market, giving advisors an early-access window on genuinely new Aman inventory. In Taipei, André Fu-designed Capella Taipei debuted with 86 rooms, a 14th-floor pool and a standalone Glasshouse bar, the city's most significant luxury opening in a decade. Its bespoke 'Capella Culturist' program builds bookable local-immersion experiences that go beyond what chain competitors offer in the market. Both are worth flagging now to clients planning late-2026 or 2027 travel: first-to-market access on new Aman inventory tends to compress quickly, and Capella Taipei fills a gap in a market advisors have had few true ultra-luxury options to sell.
Heritage Conversions: A Prison in Nara, a Château in Burgundy
Two heritage conversions expand the story-driven end of the independent-luxury map. HOSHINOYA Nara Prison, from Japan's top independent operator, turns a Meiji-era prison into a 48-room all-suite property that leans into its history rather than disguising it, with opening rates from roughly ¥147,000 (about $900) — a strong sell for advisors building Japan itineraries beyond Tokyo and Kyoto, and a test case for further government-partnered heritage conversions. In Burgundy, Fontenille Collection opened Château de Cîteaux, its first property in the region, above 12th-century Cistercian wine cellars near Meursault; 18 of a planned 35 rooms are open now, with 17 more due in 2027. Harvest events and cellar tastings launch this fall, giving advisors a concrete booking hook for wine-country clients less than three hours from Paris by train.
Explora Journeys Adds Suite Capacity With EXPLORA III
MSC's ultra-premium ocean brand has taken delivery of EXPLORA III, adding expanded Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences plus a second Patricia Urquiola-designed Owner's Residence — meaningfully more high-end suite capacity than the line's first two ships carried. New onboard concepts include a Chef's Table venue and a Mandala jewelry boutique. The inaugural season covers Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland and North America, giving advisors added top-suite inventory to sell against for clients wanting northern-latitude itineraries without sacrificing residence-level space or service. Worth a look for clients who found EXPLORA I and II's premium categories selling out early — the added penthouse and residence count on III should ease some of that pinch, at least for this first season.
European Wildfires: Athens Evacuations, Var Still Active
Wildfire activity remains active in parts of Europe as of today. Near Athens, more than 1,000 people were evacuated from Porto Germeno as a fire continues to burn; in France, blazes are still active in the Var region even though the record Gironde fire — at 162 square miles, the largest ever recorded in France — is now largely contained. Advisors with clients traveling to Greece or southeastern France this month should confirm current property access directly with hotels and monitor EFFIS high-risk fire classifications, which remain elevated. None of the activity has forced widespread cancellations yet, but conditions are shifting quickly enough that day-of confirmation is warranted for any itinerary routing near the affected areas.
