Drought forces mass rerouting on the Rhine and Danube
Rhine levels at Cologne and Düsseldorf and Danube levels near Budapest have hit record or 30-year lows this week, forcing nearly every major river line — Viking, Emerald, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Viva, Riviera, Avalon, Scenic, Tauck, Arosa, Nicko Cruises and Phoenix Reisen — into ship swaps, bus transfers around unnavigable stretches, and outright cancellations of Danube-to-Black-Sea sailings. A Viking vessel ran aground in Bulgaria and had to evacuate passengers by police boat. Phoenix Reisen is offering free rebooking; other lines are handling compensation case by case. This isn't a one-off: late-summer drought is a recurring risk on the Rhine and Danube, and with Christmas Markets season sailings booking now, clients should be briefed upfront on likely itinerary substitutions, added motorcoach segments, and each operator's rebooking terms before final payment.
AmaWaterways triples its Nile fleet for 2026
AmaWaterways is expanding sharply on the Nile: AmaNubia, a 76-guest, 38-stateroom vessel with ancient-Egyptian-inspired interiors, debuts in November, joining AmaLilia and a reimagined AmaDahlia relaunching in September to give the line three distinct Nile ships. Each pairs with a different Cairo luxury hotel partner — Four Seasons, St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton — creating tiered product within one brand, plus higher-margin land extensions to Abu Simbel, Alexandria, Dubai and Jordan. It's a clear bet that Egypt demand is durable, and it gives advisors a differentiated pitch: three price points and three hotel brands under one operator relationship. With capacity effectively tripling into a single high season, advisors should be locking 2026-27 allocations and group space now rather than waiting for peak-season sell-outs.
Riviera Travel adds dedicated hosts for first-timers and solos
Riviera Travel has hired a Chief Customer Experience Officer and rolled out dedicated onboard cruise hosts — distinct from the cruise director role — fleet-wide, a change the company says came directly from travel advisor feedback. The hosts target first-time and solo river cruisers, the segment advisors most often need to reassure to convert. It's a straightforward differentiator against Viking, AmaWaterways and Uniworld when a client is undecided between brands: advisors can now point to a named, dedicated onboard contact built specifically for guests who haven't cruised a river before or are travelling alone. Worth folding into any pitch aimed at solo travelers or hesitant first-timers this booking cycle.
