Mexico Goes Dark, Jamaica Goes Overwater: Caribbean AI Inventory Is Being Rewritten

Hard Rock's Cancun and Vallarta resorts shut down completely through December 2026, pulling wedding blocks out of Mexico, just as Sandals rebuilds three Jamaica properties around overwater villas and a private island — proof this segment's supply is moving fast in both directions at once. Elsewhere, a new Contour Airlines route eases USVI-to-St. Maarten logistics, and fresh Bridebook data shows couples increasingly saving the honeymoon for their first anniversary.

Hard Rock Cancun and Vallarta go fully dark through December 2026

Hard Rock Cancun and its Vallarta-area sister property are both going fully dark for renovations running through December 2026 — a complete shutdown, not a phased, wing-by-wing refresh. That pulls hundreds of beachfront rooms, plus the wedding lawns, ballrooms and private-event space tied to them, out of the Mexico market for the rest of the year and into next spring's peak season. Any couple or group currently holding a block at either resort needs to be moved now, before comparable inventory at sister Hard Rock properties or similar-tier competitors — Karisma, Palace, Excellence — tightens further. On-site photographers, florists and day-of coordinators contracted through the resorts' preferred-vendor lists will also need reassigning; build that into rebooking conversations rather than treating it as a details-later problem.

Sandals rebuilds three Jamaica resorts around overwater villas and a private island

Sandals is rebuilding three of its Jamaica resorts around overwater villas and a dedicated private island, a category upgrade normally associated with the Maldives or Bora Bora rather than the Caribbean. For advisors, that's new high-commission inventory to pre-sell: overwater accommodations command premium rates, and a private-island venue gives couples an exclusive-use wedding setting Sandals hasn't previously offered in Jamaica. The work lands in late 2026, so construction-phase availability will be constrained through the back half of the year — factor that into any wedding or group inquiry for Jamaica dates before year-end. The real selling window is 2027: start flagging the new overwater and private-island categories now with couples planning ahead, since these room types will likely sell out faster than standard garden- or beachfront-view categories once bookable.

First nonstop St. Thomas–St. Maarten route launches October 5

Contour Airlines will begin the first-ever nonstop service between St. Thomas and St. Maarten on October 5, giving advisors a direct link between two of the most-used USVI and Dutch Caribbean wedding and honeymoon bases. Multi-stop itineraries that split a wedding party between the two islands — a common pattern for beach ceremonies paired with island-hopping honeymoon add-ons — previously relied on connections through San Juan or other hubs. Direct routing shortens travel days for guests and cuts the missed-connection risk that tends to complicate wedding-week logistics when large parties are moving together. It's a narrow fix for a specific itinerary pattern rather than a market-wide shift, but worth keeping in mind for any USVI-anchored wedding with St. Maarten excursions, or the reverse.

1 in 5 couples now delay the honeymoon to their first anniversary

New Bridebook survey data finds one in five couples now delay their honeymoon until their first wedding anniversary rather than traveling immediately post-wedding — a shift that reframes when and how advisors should be selling honeymoon trips. It argues for treating the honeymoon as a distinct booking occasion from the wedding itself, with its own sales window roughly a year out, and for actively pitching vow-renewal and anniversary packages alongside first-time honeymoons. Maldives operators are already positioning for this: Eri Maldives is marketing vow-renewal ceremonies specifically to couples marking a first anniversary, a template advisors can extend to other honeymoon-heavy destinations. Practically, this means following up with recently married clients well past the wedding date rather than assuming the honeymoon-booking window closes once the ceremony ends.
