Rivers Run Low, Order Books Run Long

Record-low water on the Danube and Rhine is forcing bus transfers, ship swaps and cancelled Budapest sailings even as the industry keeps building for later decades — Uniworld opened bookings on three 2028 newbuilds and American Cruise Lines is already selling out a new Arkansas River route launching this fall. The contrast is the story: today's rivers are the tightest constraint advisors face, while tomorrow's inventory is filling fast regardless.

Danube and Rhine Levels Force Cancellations, Bus Transfers Through Peak Season

Danube levels in Romania are at their lowest since 1996, with Budapest and Hungary near record lows; a Rhine vessel ran aground near Bonn on July 16. AmaWaterways, Viking, Scenic, Emerald, Avalon, Trafalgar, Uniworld and Riviera Travel are all issuing contingency notices. Avalon has cancelled select 'Danube Dreams' departures outright, and guests on affected Budapest sailings are being bussed between ports rather than cruised. One Hungarian operator is already reporting an 18% July booking decline. For advisors, this isn't a distant risk — it's live, and it's hitting Budapest-Vienna and upper Danube itineraries specifically through the rest of the summer. Set client expectations before departure, confirm each supplier's ship-swap and rebooking terms in writing, and flag any booking touching the upper Danube as exposed until levels recover.

Uniworld Opens 2028 Bookings on Three New Ships, Fleet Grows to 22

Uniworld is adding three vessels for 2028: sister ships SS Helen and SS Clara, each carrying 154 guests on Danube and Rhine routes, plus the 68-guest Mekong Mystique. Bookings are open now, with published fares from £3,349 for Tulip Time up to £7,199 for the Mekong itinerary. This follows four additional ships already confirmed for 2027, pushing the fleet to 22 vessels. Given how quickly Uniworld's inaugural sailings tend to move, advisors with clients eyeing a 2028 Europe or Mekong trip should lock preferred suite categories and dates now rather than waiting for the itineraries to firm up closer to launch.

American Cruise Lines' New Arkansas Route Already Selling Out

American Cruise Lines launches a new 9-day Arkansas River itinerary this fall, running Memphis to Tulsa with Little Rock added as a full overnight port stop and Van Buren/Fort Smith as new calls, including a Thanksgiving-themed sailing. The route runs aboard 180-passenger American Serenade-class riverboats. Demand is already ahead of supply: three of the next four Arkansas River departures have sold out. Nineteen sailings are scheduled through 2029. This is a rare case where the growth story and the urgency are the same message — advisors with clients interested in this itinerary should book remaining 2026 inventory immediately rather than wait for the fall rollout.

Riviera Travel Ties Free-Cruise Drawing to Training Deadline

Riviera Travel is entering North American advisors into a drawing for a free river cruise plus economy airfare, with entry automatic for anyone who completes the free Riviera Explorer certification program by August 31 — advisors who've already finished the training are already entered. It's a low-effort way to get agents current on the line's product ahead of the fall and Christmas Markets booking rush, and completion also unlocks updated brochures, window posters and social templates. Worth flagging to any agent who hasn't yet done the certification: the deadline is five weeks out, and the incentive is real, not just a badge.
