Rivers Run Low as Fleets and Routes Keep Growing

A historic heatwave has pushed the Danube and Rhine toward record lows, forcing AmaWaterways, Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, Avalon and others into cancellations, bus transfers and ship swaps just as peak and Christmas Markets bookings ramp up. Even so, Uniworld is opening sales on three new 2028 ships and American Cruise Lines is already selling out early departures on a brand-new Arkansas River route — a reminder that disruption and expansion are running side by side this season.

Danube, Rhine Hit Historic Lows; Lines Reroute, Swap Ships, Cancel Sailings

A severe European heatwave and drought has driven the Danube to its lowest levels since 1996 in parts of Romania and near-record lows around Budapest, while the Rhine left at least one cruise ship grounded near Bonn. AmaWaterways, Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, Emerald, Avalon, Trafalgar and Riviera Travel have all confirmed itinerary changes this week — ship swaps, bus transfers around impassable stretches, and outright cancellations. Avalon has pulled multiple "Danube Dreams" and Romania-to-Germany departures outright. One Hungarian river operator is reporting an 18% drop in July bookings. For advisors, this is an active-client issue, not a background story: get ahead of it by confirming each line's contingency and compensation terms now, and flag Budapest–Vienna itineraries in particular as the most exposed heading into peak season and Christmas Markets booking windows.

Uniworld Adds Three Ships for 2028, Opens Sales on Named Departures

Uniworld is expanding to 22 ships with three 2028 newbuilds now on sale: SS Helen on the Danube, SS Clara on the Rhine (debuting on the popular Holland & Belgium Tulip Time itinerary), and Mekong Mystique joining Mekong Jewel in Vietnam and Cambodia. Lead-in pricing is already published — Tulip Time from £3,349, the 15-day Danube Grandeur from £5,549, and the Mekong itinerary from £7,199 — with departure dates confirmed. This comes on top of four ships already set to launch in 2027, giving advisors a real window to sell inaugural sailings and lock in preferred suite categories before demand builds, particularly for the new Rhine and Mekong product.

Riviera Travel Ties Free-Cruise Drawing to Training Completion Deadline

To mark the first anniversary of Riviera Explorer, its free digital training platform, Riviera Travel is automatically entering every North American advisor who completes the course — or has already completed it — into a random drawing for a free river cruise with economy airfare included. The catch for advisors who haven't started: the entry window closes August 31, 2026. It's a low-effort, high-value incentive to build Riviera product knowledge right as Christmas Markets and 2027 season selling ramp up, and worth flagging to any advisor who hasn't yet logged into the platform.

American Cruise Lines' New Arkansas River Route Already Selling Out

Starting this November, American Cruise Lines is launching a new nine-day Memphis-to-Tulsa itinerary on its 180-passenger riverboats, with Little Rock added as a new full-day overnight port and a Thanksgiving-themed departure among the early sailings. Three of the next four departures have already sold out, and the line has 19 Arkansas River sailings on sale through 2029. For advisors with US river cruise clients looking for something beyond the Mississippi mainstays, this is a time-sensitive opportunity — early demand suggests the strongest departure dates won't stay open long.
