Rivers Run Low, Bookings Run Deep

Record-low Rhine and Danube levels triggered mass cancellations, vessel swaps and a Viking grounding this week — even as Uniworld and AmaWaterways dangle deadline-driven 2027/2028 incentives to keep future bookings flowing. Meanwhile American Cruise Lines presses on with fleet expansion, unaffected by Europe's water woes.

Drought Forces Cancellations, a Grounding, and a Trade-Wide Scramble to Protect Commission

Record-low water on the Rhine and Danube has moved from watch item to active disruption. The Kaub gauge near Koblenz dropped below its 2018 record, while Danube levels at Budapest reportedly touched just 10cm, forcing Riviera Travel to cancel 10 departures outright and modify six more. Uniworld has substituted vessels on affected routes, and a Viking ship ran aground and evacuated 186 guests. Trade press credits operators with managing the crisis responsibly: guests are being rebooked into late 2026 and 2027 sailings, offered price protection and coach transfers around blocked stretches, and — per Panache — commission is being protected on cancelled bookings. Holland and Belgium's lock-controlled waterways remain a dependable fallback for itinerary substitutions. Brief clients now that low-water risk cuts both ways: heavy rain could just as easily trigger high-water suspensions later in the season.

  • Riviera Travel: 10 departures cancelled, 6 modified
  • Viking: ship grounded, 186 guests evacuated
  • Fallbacks: rebooking, price protection, protected commission, Holland/Belgium routing

Two Deadline Incentives Worth Flagging Before They Expire

Two of the segment's biggest names are racing to lock in future bookings before drought headlines cool demand. Uniworld will waive the cost of a 3-night pre- or post-cruise hotel stay — in cities including Ljubljana, Lisbon and Vienna — and add €125pp onboard credit across 29 departures on six 2027 European itineraries, but only for bookings made by 31 August. AmaWaterways, which rarely discounts, is cutting up to $2,500 per stateroom on 2028 Danube, Rhine and Douro sailings through its Early Booking Rewards program, with bookings needed by 30 September; agencies get held cabins and re-fare price protection built in. Both windows are tight — roughly two and six weeks out, respectively — making them right-now conversion tools for advisors sitting on warm 2027/2028 river leads rather than long-term planning notes.

American Cruise Lines Names Two More Riverboats, Fleet Nears 30

American Cruise Lines keeps adding capacity at a pace no European operator is matching. The line has named American Beauty, a 180-guest, all-balcony riverboat launching September 2028 on 8-day Upper Mississippi itineraries plus new Gulf Coast sailings between New Orleans and Pensacola, and American Rhapsody, opening 9-day Columbia and Snake River itineraries in 2029. Both confirm ACL's rhythm of roughly three new ships a year, pushing the fleet toward 30 vessels. The near-term opportunity for advisors is early-booking pricing on itineraries without two years of sailing history yet — Gulf Coast in particular is new enough that clients booking now are effectively first-wave. Worth flagging to past Mississippi guests looking for a reason to sail with the line again.
