Rivers Run Dry, But the Nile Keeps Rising

Record-low water on the Danube and Rhine has cancelled sailings, grounded two Viking ships, and pushed Serbia to warn of a full Danube shutdown within days, while Riviera Travel rolls out compensation tiers to keep bookings intact. Meanwhile AmaWaterways presses ahead on the Nile, adding AmaNubia and a relaunched AmaDahlia toward a four-ship Egypt fleet by 2027.

Danube and Rhine Hit Record Lows — and a Full Shutdown Is Now on the Table

Europe's drought crisis for river cruising sharpened this week. Budapest's Danube gauge fell to a record 10cm on August 3 — well below the previous low of 33cm set in 2018 — while the Rhine hit all-time lows at Cologne and Lobith. Avalon and Uniworld have cancelled Danube departures outright; Viking, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Emerald, Tauck, Viva and TUI are running ship-swaps, bus transfers and altered embarkation points instead. Two vessels, Viking Einar and Viking Ullur, have run aground. The situation could worsen fast: Serbia's president has warned Danube shipping could halt completely within two to three days, as newly exposed WWII wrecks near Prahovo have permanently narrowed the navigable channel from 180m to roughly 100m, already cutting vessel loads near Bezdan to about half capacity. Advisors with clients booked on Rhine or Danube sailings through August should proactively flag missed ports — Budapest, Nuremberg, Regensburg — and treat late-August Budapest-to-Black Sea departures as at risk of outright cancellation, not just delay.

Riviera Travel's Playbook: Push Rebooking-With-Contribution Before Refunds

Riviera Travel has moved fastest among the majors to formalize its response. The operator has launched a Travel Updates Hub refreshed twice daily and mirrored to trade partners, added call-centre staff and cruise directors, and is offering affected guests — and the advisors who booked them — three paths: price-matched rebooking onto another holiday with a £250-per-person contribution, a straight transfer, or a full refund. Eight of 27 affected Rhine and Danube departures have been cancelled so far, with more under review. For advisors, the rebooking-with-contribution option is the one worth leading with: it preserves commission that a straight refund would erase, while still compensating the client. Use Riviera's hub as the reference point when resetting expectations with clients booked on affected sailings, and confirm which of the 27 departures are impacted before offering alternatives.

AmaWaterways Doubles Down on the Nile as Europe's Rivers Falter

AmaWaterways is expanding its Nile presence just as Egypt demand stays strong. AmaNubia, a 76-guest ship with ancient-Egyptian-inspired interiors, debuts in November, joining a reimagined AmaDahlia relaunching in September alongside AmaLilia — and a fourth ship, AmaCleo, is confirmed for fall 2027, building toward a four-ship Nile fleet. The line has paired the expansion with hotel tie-ins at Four Seasons, St. Regis and the Ritz-Carlton Cairo, giving advisors pre- and post-cruise upsell options alongside new sailing dates. With Rhine and Danube itineraries in disarray, this is a useful moment to redirect clients weighing a European river cruise toward Egypt's Nile product instead — capacity and hotel partnerships are both expanding rather than contracting, and 2026-27 pricing tiers are opening up for early positioning.
