Rivers Run Low, Fleets Run Big

Record-low water on the Rhine and Danube is forcing AmaWaterways, Viking, Uniworld, Scenic/Emerald, Avalon, Trafalgar and Riviera Travel into cancellations, ship swaps and Budapest reroutes this week. Even as the drought squeezes today's departures, Uniworld is ordering three more ships for 2028 and American Cruise Lines' new Arkansas River route is already selling out — a reminder that near-term disruption and long-term capacity growth are running on separate tracks.

Rhine-Danube Drought Forces Reroutes Across Nearly Every Major Line

Water levels on the Danube are at or near record lows — the lowest since 1996 in Romania, within inches of the 2018 low in Budapest — while the Rhine is seeing historic lows of its own. AmaWaterways, Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, Emerald, Avalon, Trafalgar and Riviera Travel have all responded with cancellations, ship swaps, bus transfers around impassable stretches, and embarkation/disembarkation moved away from Budapest. A ship ran aground near Bonn, the Netherlands has declared a national water shortage, and one Hungarian operator is reporting an 18% July booking decline. For advisors, this is not a one-off: it's affecting nearly every operator on these rivers simultaneously. Set client expectations proactively, know each line's specific contingency policy before you sell it, and keep a close eye on late-summer and fall Rhine-Danube departures, where further disruption is likely if rain doesn't come.

Uniworld Orders Three More Ships, Opens 2028 Booking Window

Uniworld is adding the Danube-bound SS Helen, Rhine-bound SS Clara and Mekong-bound Mekong Mystique, growing its fleet to 22 ships and joining four vessels already confirmed for 2027. New 2028 inaugural sailings now open for sale include Danube Grandeur, Holland & Belgium at Tulip Time, and Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong. With bookings open well ahead of the season, advisors have a window to secure preferred cabin categories on new-build inventory before demand builds — useful leverage for clients who want first crack at a new ship rather than settling for whatever's left closer to sailing. It's also a signal that Uniworld is growing capacity across both its core European rivers and its Southeast Asia program at the same time, rather than favoring one over the other.

American Cruise Lines' New Arkansas River Route Is Already Selling Out

American Cruise Lines has launched a new nine-day Memphis-to-Tulsa itinerary on the Arkansas River, starting in November aboard 180-passenger ships and including a Thanksgiving-themed departure. The route adds Little Rock as a full-day overnight port rather than a quick stop. Of the next four scheduled sailings, three are already sold out, part of 19 departures scheduled through 2029. For advisors working the domestic river segment, this is a pacing signal: inventory on the new route is moving fast, and clients wanting near-term dates should be booked now rather than shopped around.

Riviera Travel Ties Training Completion to a Free-Cruise Draw

Marking the first anniversary of its Riviera Explorer training platform, Riviera Travel is offering North America-based advisors who complete the free program by August 31, 2026 entry into a drawing for a free river cruise with airfare included. Completing the training also unlocks brochures and selling tools ahead of peak booking season, so the incentive is really a nudge toward product fluency as much as a prize giveaway. With Rhine-Danube disruption dominating client conversations right now, advisors who've done the training will be better positioned to answer specific itinerary and contingency questions — worth prioritizing before the deadline.
