Drought Grounds the Rhine and Danube as Uniworld Bets Big on 2028

With the Danube near Budapest within 8 cm of an all-time low and Avalon already canceling late-July departures, advisors face an immediate triage call on European bookings. At the same time, Uniworld has opened inaugural inventory on three 2028 newbuilds spanning the Danube, Rhine, and Mekong — the brand's largest fleet expansion in its history and a signal that the industry's long view on the segment remains unshaken.

Danube Near Historic Low as Avalon Cancels; Line-by-Line Status on the Rhine

The Danube near Budapest is now within 8 cm of its 2018 all-time record low, and Romania is reporting its lowest Danube levels since 1996. The Netherlands has declared a Level 2 national water shortage. Avalon Waterways has confirmed cancellations on July 22 and 23 departures of Danube Dreams and Danube from Romania to Germany (Avalon Impression). AmaWaterways has zero cancellations but is executing ship swaps and motorcoach transfers around impassable upper-Danube stretches (Regensburg to Passau); Scenic and Emerald are doing the same on Main and Rhine segments. Viking is alerting guests to possible disruptions and alternative docking. APT/Travelmarvel reports most sailings operating with some adjustments; Riviera Travel claims minimal impact. One Hungarian operator has already logged an 18% drop in July bookings. A partial reprieve is in view: the Rhine at Kaub is expected to reach 93 cm by midweek, sharply up from roughly 40 cm last week. The Budapest–Vienna corridor remains the most disrupted segment — advisors should request line-specific status confirmation before any client communication this week.

Uniworld Opens 2028 Inaugural Bookings: Three New Ships on the Danube, Rhine, and Mekong

Uniworld has opened bookings on three all-suite Super Ship newbuilds debuting in 2028 — the brand's largest single expansion. S.S. Helen (154 guests, Greek antiquity-themed) sails the Danube on the 15-day Danube Grandeur through six countries from £5,549, first departure October 28, 2028. S.S. Clara (154 guests, Dutch Golden Age décor) joins the Rhine fleet with the 8-day Holland & Belgium at Tulip Time from £3,349, first sailing March 31, 2028. Mekong Mystique (68 guests, Indochine-inspired) doubles Uniworld's Mekong capacity alongside Mekong Jewel on the 15-day Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong from £7,199, first departure January 6, 2028. Combined with four ships arriving in 2027, Uniworld reaches 22 vessels — its largest-ever fleet. Inaugural suites and peak-season dates are flagged as highest sellout risk; the Mekong product in particular operates in a chronically supply-constrained segment.

American Cruise Lines Launches Arkansas River Route; Three of Four Near-Term Sailings Already Sold Out

American Cruise Lines has opened a 9-day, 8-night itinerary between Tulsa, Oklahoma and Memphis, Tennessee along the Arkansas River — a corridor billed as one of America's hidden gems and, notably, one with no domestic competitor. The route threads through Van Buren and Fort Smith, Arkansas, winding through Ozark foothills aboard ships carrying up to 180 passengers. Three of the next four departures are already sold out; 19 sailings are bookable through 2029. A Thanksgiving-themed sailing from Little Rock to Tulsa adds a holiday hook for advisors looking for differentiated seasonal product. The scarcity signal is immediate rather than theoretical. US river specialists should pull current inventory now and flag this to clients who have expressed interest in domestic alternatives — particularly relevant this week, given that European disruptions are pushing some travelers to reconsider transatlantic river plans.

Riviera Travel Free-Cruise Draw: August 31 Deadline for Advisor Training Graduates

To mark the first anniversary of its Riviera Explorer digital training platform, Riviera Travel is offering all North American advisors who complete the program by August 31 automatic entry into a draw for a free river cruise including economy airfare for one. There is no separate application — all graduates, including those who finished the platform before this announcement, are automatically enrolled. The draw takes place after the deadline closes. The platform covers destination product knowledge, training videos, social media templates, and brochure materials. The mechanic is deliberately low-friction: advisors already planning to train simply need to finish before the deadline to gain both product competency and prize eligibility. With 40 days remaining and the 2027 selling season approaching, advisors with an untapped pipeline of first-time river clients have the clearest argument to act now.

Egypt Revokes Nile Cruise Operator's Permit After Waste Discharge at Luxor

Egypt's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has revoked the operating permit of a Nile tourist cruise vessel after inspectors documented liquid waste discharged directly into the Nile at Luxor's Awamiya district. The vessel's navigation permit is suspended through July 31, 2026; the case has been referred to the Environmental and Water Bodies Police and forwarded to Public Prosecution. Under Law 48 of 1982, penalties run to one year in prison and fines of EGP 50,000–200,000, with escalation for repeat offenses; Minister Hani Sewilam has publicly warned that dumping can trigger fines up to EGP 500,000. The action is part of a declared nationwide inspection campaign. For advisors booking Nile itineraries, the enforcement trajectory is unambiguous: Egyptian authorities are actively prosecuting environmental violations, and vetting operator compliance records and current permit status should be part of due diligence before confirming any Nile booking.
