Bathhouses Go Global — And a Thailand Retreat Times Itself to the Moon

China's 24-hour bathhouses are pulling in a new generation of domestic travelers, and the Global Wellness Institute has just opened the first industry-wide survey to benchmark that boom. Meanwhile Kamalaya in Koh Samui marks its 21st year with a lunar-cycle program — a reminder that both scale and specificity are shaping wellness travel this week.

China's 24-Hour Bathhouses Prompt an Industry Benchmark

Round-the-clock bathhouses — communal soaking, saunas, food halls, karaoke, even overnight sleeping pods — are emerging as one of the fastest-growing wellness travel formats in China, pulling younger domestic travelers into venues once seen as mid-market, local-only spots. For outbound itineraries the appeal is a low-cost, high-frequency wellness touchpoint that pairs easily with a city stay, giving advisors a differentiated add-on for Asia-bound clients who want thermal wellness without a full retreat-length commitment.

The category has grown enough that the Global Wellness Institute has opened its first global bathhouse benchmarking survey, run through its Hydrothermal and Consulting Initiatives, collecting pricing, occupancy and operational data from bathhouse and thermal-wellness operators worldwide, with results due in September 2026. For advisors sourcing sauna, hammam and communal-thermal properties, that data should sharpen supplier vetting and pricing conversations as the format scales past China.

Kamalaya Ties a New Program to the Lunar Cycle

Kamalaya Koh Samui has introduced Sacred Renewal, a wellness program structured around the lunar cycle, timed to the property's 21st anniversary. It gives advisors a concrete, bookable hook for spiritually-minded and longevity-focused clients weighing Thailand ahead of high season — more specific than a generic detox-and-spa pitch.

Kamalaya's positioning has long blended Eastern healing traditions with clinical wellness diagnostics, and a moon-phase framework extends that without a full program overhaul. Worth flagging to clients now: anniversary-tied launches often carry introductory availability and can anchor a broader Koh Samui stay alongside beach time or a Bangkok stopover.
