Commission, Cabins and Kids: Ultra-Luxury Lines Rewrite Their Rules

Explora Journeys becomes the first ultra-luxury brand to pay agents commission on shore excursions, Regent trims Explorer-class suite counts while enlarging its entry-level cabins, and Aurora Expeditions drops its minimum sailing age to six — three separate moves that change how advisors earn, sell suites and book families. Further out, Ponant, Scenic Eclipse and Atlas Ocean Voyages opened 2028-29 collections spanning Antarctica, Asia-Pacific and a 128-night world voyage.

Explora Journeys Pays Agents on Shore Excursions — A Sector First

Explora Journeys has become the first ultra-luxury line to pay travel advisors commission on shore excursions and other destination experiences, a sector-first policy MSC's ocean brand says is designed to push pre-booked shore-ex from roughly 80 percent of guests toward 90 percent before departure. For advisors, this changes the math on every Explora quote: excursions that previously earned nothing now contribute directly to booking revenue, giving advisors reason to walk clients through the full shore-ex menu at the point of sale rather than leaving it to onboard sign-up. Explora chief executive Anna Nash has framed the move as part of a broader push to deepen the trade relationship as the brand scales its fleet. Advisors working Explora should start bundling excursions into initial quotes now, both to capture the new commission and to lock in inventory on popular departures before they sell out closer to sailing.

Regent Shrinks Explorer-Class Suite Count, Grows the Entry-Level Cabin

Regent Seven Seas will cut suite counts across its three Explorer-class ships — Splendor, Explorer and Grandeur — from 373 to 344 during dry docks running November 2027 through October 2028, using the reclaimed space to enlarge entry-level Veranda suites from 307 to between 415 and 464 square feet and to add new Horizon Penthouse and signature suite categories. The math is straightforward for advisors: fewer total suites per sailing means tighter inventory and likely firmer pricing on ships that already sail at ultra-luxury rates, while a materially larger entry-level cabin gives Regent a stronger answer to competitors' base categories. Splendor goes first in November 2027, followed by Explorer in April 2028 and Grandeur that October. Advisors with clients eyeing these ships for 2027-28 sailings should book and waitlist now, before the reduced capacity and new category mix reset pricing across the board.

Aurora Expeditions Opens Its Ships to Six-Year-Olds

Aurora Expeditions has lowered its minimum sailing age from eight to six and launched a Family Discount program: up to 50 percent off for two children or one teen sharing a cabin with two adults, and 25 percent off for solo-parent bookings. The move opens Aurora's polar and expedition itineraries to a younger family segment the brand hasn't previously served, and gives advisors a concrete, quantifiable offer to lead with rather than a vague pitch about adventure travel for families. It's a meaningful shift for a category that has generally skewed toward older, single or paired travelers, and puts Aurora ahead of peers still holding higher age minimums. The discount is explicitly flagged as available now but subject to withdrawal, so advisors with family clients interested in Arctic or Antarctic expeditions should quote and confirm promptly rather than waiting for a future season.

2028-29 Expedition Season Goes on Sale: Antarctica, Asia-Pacific and a 128-Night World Voyage

Three expedition and luxury lines opened long-lead 2028-29 collections, giving advisors an early runway to secure premium departures before marquee sailings sell out.

  • Ponant put its Nov 2028–Feb 2029 Antarctic season on sale across four ships, including a 60-night full continent circumnavigation and two 30-night half-circumnavigations.
  • Scenic Eclipse II's 2028-29 Asia-Pacific collection covers Japan, the Kimberley, Tasmania and New Zealand, adding Palau, Hong Kong and Singapore, with complimentary 20-minute helicopter flightseeing bundled into Best Available fares.
  • Atlas Ocean Voyages unveiled a 128-night Grand Odyssey from Japan to South Africa for 2028 aboard its new sailing yacht, extending the line beyond short polar sailings into long-haul, high-value itineraries.
