Rhine and Danube Near Record Lows While Uniworld Opens 2028 Fleet to Early Booking

Confirmed Avalon cancellations and active disruptions across six operators make European water levels the most urgent client-care issue of the summer; simultaneously, Uniworld's three-ship 2028 announcement — including a new Mekong vessel — opens early-booking inventory across Europe and Southeast Asia for advisors ready to pivot from crisis to pipeline.

Rhine and Danube Approach Historic Lows, Cancellations Confirmed Across Multiple Lines

The Danube in Budapest is within 8 centimeters of its 2018 all-time record low; the Rhine near Frankfurt bottomed at 53 cm last week. Avalon Waterways has confirmed cancellations on five 'Danube Dreams' and 'Danube from Romania to Germany' departures — July 12, 14, 15, 22, and 23. AmaWaterways, Scenic, Emerald, Viking, and APT/Travelmarvel are adjusting itineraries or issuing active client warnings. A vessel grounded on a sandbar near Bonn on July 16. Budapest — a primary turnaround port — is largely unreachable, forcing hotel nights, motorcoach transfers, and emergency ship swaps. Romania's Danube hit its lowest level since 1996; the Netherlands declared a Level 2 drought, only its third on record. Rhine conditions are improving slightly, forecast at 93 cm at Kaub gauge by Wednesday. Riviera Travel and APT report minimal impact on their own sailings. Advisor action: contact every client booked on Rhine or Danube itineraries through August now, and confirm each line's cancellation and compensation protocol before clients call you.

Uniworld Opens 2028 Bookings on Three Newbuilds Across Danube, Rhine, and Mekong

Uniworld has launched 2028 booking across its largest-ever expansion: S.S. Helen (154 guests, Danube) leads with a 15-day 'Danube Grandeur' departing October 28, 2028, from £5,549 per person. S.S. Clara (154 guests, Rhine) debuts on an 8-day 'Holland & Belgium at Tulip Time' departing March 31, 2028, from £3,349. Mekong Mystique (68 guests) is the commercially most significant addition — it doubles Uniworld's Southeast Asia capacity alongside Mekong Jewel, exclusively sailing a 15-day 'Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong' departing January 6, 2028, from £7,199. Combined with four 2027 launches, the fleet reaches 22 ships. Inaugural and peak-season sailings are already flagged as high-demand. The Mekong entry sits in a supply-constrained, high-commission segment where early suite selection will matter: advisors should identify Mekong-curious clients and Danube/Rhine loyalists and move now.

Riviera Travel Offers North American Advisors a Free River Cruise for Completing Explorer Training by Aug. 31

Riviera Travel is marking the first anniversary of its Riviera Explorer digital training platform with a draw open to all North American advisors. Complete the platform by August 31, 2026, and you're automatically entered to win a complimentary river cruise plus economy-class airfare for one. Advisors who already completed the program are already entered — no additional action needed. The platform covers Riviera's full river cruise range and includes brochures, social-media templates, training videos, and sales tools. At 40 days to the deadline, the cost of entry is the time to complete the training — a lower-friction threshold than most FAM programs — from a line that remains under-represented in many North American agency portfolios. Worth flagging to colleagues who haven't yet enrolled.

Emerald Kaia Adds Two Indian Ocean Sailings in November 2026, Upsell Opening for River Clients

Emerald Cruises has deployed its 128-guest luxury yacht Emerald Kaia on two 13-day back-to-back itineraries in the Indian Ocean. Departures on November 17 and November 29, 2026 run between Mahé, Seychelles and Mombasa, Kenya, calling at remote sites including Farquhar Atoll, the UNESCO-listed Aldabra Atoll, Kilwa Kisiwani, Mafia Island, and Zanzibar — destinations inaccessible to larger ocean vessels. The product is all-inclusive and sits within Emerald's yacht fleet rather than its European river range, but advisors already booking Emerald river clients have a natural warm-lead upsell: luxury-motivated travelers who've experienced Emerald on the Rhine or Danube and want something more exotic, with a clear November window. At four months out, the November 17 departure has the tighter horizon.

Egypt Revokes Nile Cruise Permit Over Waste Discharge, Nationwide Inspections Ordered

Egypt's Ministry of Water Resources suspended a Nile tourist cruise boat's navigation permit for the full month of July 2026 after inspectors found it discharging liquid waste directly into the Nile at Luxor's Corniche. The case has been referred to Public Prosecution under Law 48/1982, which carries penalties of up to one year's imprisonment and fines between EGP 50,000 and 200,000. Minister Hani Sewilam has ordered a nationwide Nile inspection campaign, raising the credible risk of further permit actions against non-compliant operators. For advisors placing clients on Nile cruises, the practical signal is to prioritize operators with documented environmental and waste-management standards — and to be prepared to address the enforcement climate if clients raise questions about their upcoming sailing.
